Watch an Epic and Rainy EG Hatch ‘Tōge’ Battle in Japan
An organized mountain race looks like a lot of fun in an EG hatch. Where do we sign up?
In Japanese, “tōge” means “pass.” This is in reference to a mountain road, as it allows one to pass through the mountain. This was the basis for what would become a complete counter-culture of Japan, breeding racers alike to compete on the dangerous and windy roads.
How exactly does one win a Tōge race? Well, the majority of mountain roads are by definition narrow. This means passing the leading car under these circumstances would be nothing short of suicide for both drivers. To do a maneuver such as this would simply not be feasible. Thus, the winner of a race is decided in a different way. There is always a lead car and a chase car. If the chase car is unable to keep the pace of the lead car and maintain close proximity, the lead car wins and vice versa. This video shows taking this style of racing and making a bit more organized. It appears to be a sanctioned event on a closed road. This makes for some amazing racing. Let’s check FLfilms YouTube channel to learn more.
We are unsure about the exact details of this event or where in Japan it takes place. We really wished we did because we would like to go and check it out. However, we do know spectators are alive and well at the event, they are seen many times in the video. It almost seems that this is a decent-sized event that only happened last year. Perhaps it’s a yearly occasion?
Considering every single car in the video including our hero car, the EG Civic hatch, has a roll cage, they aren’t messing around. Interestingly, there are all kinds of different cars there. They come in varying levels of modification, from stock-looking to race car. However, our black Civic happens to be going head to head with a stock-ish Toyota GT86. The on-board footage from the Civic makes this style of racing look so fun and really intense.
It is definitely worth it to watch the full video to see the Civic go up against a DC2 Integra as well. Not to mention a couple of flying laps which show some true levels of bravery.
