Acura NSX GT3 p Preview of NSX Type R?

Rumor suggests a specific date for an NSX Type R launch and a power bump to 650 horsepower.

Rumors of Acura launching an NSX Type R version have been floating around since the new NSX was launched in 2016. The latest whispers come from the Japanese website Best Car Web and are the most specific yet. According to the rumor, Honda’s supercar’s souped-up NSX will be with us in October 2021 and make around 650 horsepower. The current hybrid supercar’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine and three electric motors generate 573 hp, meaning we would be looking at a significant boost of about 77 hp.

A power bump wouldn’t be the only ingredient for a Type-R version. The first-generation NSX-R variant was stripped of weight at the cost of daily-driver comforts, its suspension was stiffened and tuned aggressively, and a higher locking limited-slip differential was added. For the 21st century, we would also express a more aggressive aero package to be incorporated as well.

It’s worth noting there was no mention of the electric motors in the report, and the hardcore is hoping that they will be dropped to revert the NSX to a rear-wheel-drive gas-only powered car like the GT3-spec NSX. That would be a considerable saving in weight if Acura went down that road for the Type R version, as the GT3-spec car saved 1,069 lbs by losing the motors and batteries.

Also mentioned is a topless NSX Spider version of the NSX coming down the pike. If the rumor is to be believed, that will follow in December of 2021. There’s no detail to that rumor as to whether it would be a Targa-top version like the original or a more traditional roadster as teased in the 2012 Avengers movie.
Unfortunately, the NSX hasn’t received the love and sales it deserves. Hopefully, we will see an NSX Type R and roadster version to give Acura’s supercar a much needed shot in the arm.
