Honda Is Poised to Announce Two New Electrified Sports Cars

Electrified Sports Cars

S2000 and NSX are both gone but Honda promises that their spirit will live on in the form of two new electrified sports cars.

Honda will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2023. And what better way to celebrate than to bring back a pair of their most revered sports cars? Of course, this being 2023 they will likely be electrified sports cars but that doesn’t damper our enthusiasm. Autocar recently sat down with Europe vice president Tom Gardner and asked about enthusiast-focused halo models.

His response was: “Honda has a very strong technology base. Not technology just for the sake of technology, but technology that adds new value to customers. And we love a sports car. We love performance, and we’re very grateful for the strong reaction we’ve had to the latest Type R. There is huge demand for it, and the performance has been very well appreciated. We really enjoyed seeing it nail the Nürburgring record in the last month, and that is an important part of our brand.”

Well, that is certainly encouraging. He went on to point out that for the 50-year celebration we got the S2000. So, we should expect something similar for the 75-year mark. Although don’t hold your breath for a normally aspirated engine that revs to 9,000 rpm.

Still, the S2000 remains a favorite among Honda fans and rumors of a revival have been swirling for years. 2023 would be a good time to put the rumors to rest with a formal announcement.

At the same time that doesn’t seem like the only bit of good news. Last year Honda confirmed that it would introduce a ‘flagship’ GT-style model as part of the 30 EVs they plan to launch by 2030.

Those of a certain age may remember the original Civic CRX and then the Type R after that. Those same folks may now be worried that the fun may be over now that Honda is focused on building EVs.

But that will not be the case. One of Honda’s lead engineers, Hideki Kakinuma, told Autocar that “without Type R, there is no Honda.” So, the electrified era will produce different types of cars. But the mission of driving fun will remain the same.

Honda S2000

S2000

The original S2000 was defined by its high revving 4-cylinder engine, sharp handling, and light weight. The EV S2000 will be different but the same level of driver excitement should be there.

Porsche is doing the same thing with their Cayman/Boxster line going all-electric in the next couple of years.

So, Honda is certainly not treading into these waters alone. And knowing Honda and how they can extract big power from tiny packages we should expect the new Honda S2000 to offer thrilling performance.

Flagship GT

Electrified

The last generation of the NSX was a hybrid, so it is already one step closer to full electrification than the S2000. And with this being a GT car we should expect a bigger and more powerful car. It will not surprise us if this new car becomes the quickest accelerating Honda sports car we have ever seen. We can’t wait to learn more about these two new electrified sports cars. Stay tuned as we will share news right here the moment, we have it.
