2000 HP Civic Goes 212 MPH on 85 PSI

Speedfactory Racing holds so many drag racing world records with not one monster Honda Civic, but two. We think they are getting bored.

At Honda-Tech we have seen our fair share of fast Civics. However, there are fast cars and then there are record-setting cars. The two Civic drag cars featured in this video are among the latter. As you can see, these cars are more than just slapping a turbo on a B-motor, turning up the boost and calling it good. These cars are professional race-prepped machines that were built with only one thing in mind: winning.

Speedfactory Racing is good at doing that. When they bring out their cars, the games are over and its all about business. This is exactly what happened at the Import v. Domestic World Cup Finals 2019 event. The annual event takes place at Maryland Internation Raceway and is extremely popular. The venue hosts over 40,000 fans on a yearly basis and features around 400 different race cars going head-to-head. However, there were only two cars we really care about in attendance and both of them were Civics. Thanks to That Racing Channel on YouTube, we get to find out what it takes to break world records.

Kevin Kempf, driver and co-owner for Speedfactory Racing, breaks down some details about the cars for us. At the event, they have Ostrem Racing’s 1996 Civic EK sedan powered by an AWD B-series (the purple car). In addition, they also have out the Competition Clutch “Outlaw” EG hatch FWD B-series Civic (the red and white car). The first question you should probably ask is how the hell do you make 2000 HP out of a 2.0-liter engine. That is 500 HP per cylinder, 1000 HP per liter. If that doesn’t blow your mind, to begin with, we don’t know what will. Well, the answer is actually relatively simple: a billet aluminum engine block. These are built by Bullet Race Engineering based out of Australia.

As you might imagine, they are expensive. $7 grand or so just for the block and that doesn’t include shipping. You best believe there is some money put into these cars. However, there is still a factory crank in the car because somehow, it can support the power. BME rods and pistons are also used. The transmission for the AWD car is also obviously billet to handle the power. Interestingly, the purple AWD car only makes around 1300 HP from its 76mm turbo, but still was managing 7’s in the quarter-mile at around 190 mph. Wet weight is just around 2,700 pounds.

Insane? Yes, but the Red Civic is Even Wilder

The red car uses the same block, but it is a dry race block, meaning there is no coolant in the bottom end for more rigidity. Kempf states they have been able to throw 90 psi of boost at the engine with an 86mm turbo without any issues. It’s stunning what the technology of these billet blocks can accomplish. That car managed to run a 7.47 at 215 mph last year. The team’s goal is to be the first FWD car to run a 6-second quarter-mile time. They already have the record for fastest FWD, fastest Honda, fastest manual transmission car, fastest stock unibody car, and seemingly a million other records. There would be no surprises in our book if they managed a 6. We hope to see that in the coming years.
