PROJECT! I'm building a DOHC Honda motor from scratch! [pics]
MOTOR ALMOST COMPLETE! CHECK MY LAST POST FOR AN ANIMATION
... In 3D that is! I'm doing this as a learning experience and since the components in motors have relativly simple designs and construction.
My intent of this project of mine is to further my knowledge on 4-cylinder DOHC motor internals, and to assist in educating other by having a collection of pictures of accurately constructed parts in 3D which I'm positive will provide better help to people than showing a picture from a Helms manual or a photograph.
Below is the work of about 4 hours in one night. I will be using materials on these objects when the motor is complete, but for now the colors help me differentiate certain objects from others. I'm not sure if any one on this forum is into modeling or anything like this, but if you are, I'm using the VRAY renderer for global illumination and 3DSMax 5.2
So far, I've completed the cam gears, retainers, dual-valve springs, valves, piston rods, valve keepers, and crank. The cam's are simple cylinders as of now since I havent figured out how I want to set them up and I dont have an actual cam to take measurements from. Pistons are obviously just place holders as well. Also, all dimensions on these parts are from a Helms manual, so sizes are accurate.
And... this entire motor is animated as well at 2 revolutions per second for easy viewing
Let me know what you guys think. I'm not going to model things like the valve cover, just the moving parts.
Thanks for looking, I had another screen name, GPoodle but I got banned because I of something I said in another post. Oh well!

Thanks
Its for myself ... I used to do a lot of work for video games like 3 yrs ago when I was 15 and 16, and I sorta got bored with it so modeling a motor, something I'm very interested in, will hopefully get my motivation for this type of thing back. Plus it'll be an additional challenge in itself just to animate the ******!
Ill basically be modeling these things:

When it Autocad, do the design and drwaing, import into Vis3D Studio, where you can animate the subject, in this case it would enable the engine to turn over.

I'm not in school for this type of stuff, my major is called "Visual Communication", it sucks.
I've been using 3DStudio Max since version 3.0, so in other words for about 4 years. I worked on a game, Bid For Power, for about 2.5 yrs and had some work featured in a couple gaming magazines. I do have Lightwave, but I've been able to do everything I need to with 3DSMax and since I'm using a $800 rendering plugin I'm not missing out on LightWaves rendering tools and dont really see a need to spend another 2 years learning a new program. I've got a bunch of old **** on my website, at http://www.polycount.com/cottages/xyz but I havent updated that site in like a year and half so there's a lot better work than what's on there.
I'll post new pics of the motor tonight hopefully, got the crank, pistons, and flywheel modeled.

Looks awesome, now you just gotta put some dome on those pistons (17.0:1 should be good, hehe) and a crank so your valves don't tap... Keep us posted

VIDEO ANIMATION OF BOTTOM END!
Check it out HERE ---->>>> http://www.polycount.com/cotta...1.avi
Now I'm moving on to animating the valves, modeling and animating the rocker arm assembly's, and making cams. It's comming along nicely imo

Hey, love the animation. Just a suggestion, it would be awesome if you could animate the air coming in during intake stroke, ignition and flame travel during compression, power, and exhaust. Also, if you could incorporate a sound for the combustion cycle, it would be a total package.
