My new 57trim SOHC setup w/vitara's- UPDATED: TRACK TIMES!
Here's some underhood pics:
And here's a pic of the air filter that cost me 40+HP and several days of extreme frustration.
Never use one of these filters! We spent days disassembling and reassembling my entire turbo setup and checking everything, testing and retesting, trying to figure out why the car wouldn't boost more than 12 psi, even with the wastegate completely blocked off! As a last ditch effort we removed it on the dyno and gained 40whp at 12psi, and no more boost problems!
The engine setup:
Stock bore D16Y8
Stock head, valvetrain, TB, Z6 intake manifold
Suzuki Vitara pistons
Eagle rods
Zex 59300 cam
ARP headstuds
255lph HP in-tank pump
RC750's
Uberdata
Motorola 2.5bar map sensor
Stock ignition
The drivetrain setup:
Y8 tranny
OBX LSD
Stock axles
ACT Xtreme PP w/stock organic disc
12lb stock flywheel
The turbo setup:
T3/T04E 57 Trim .63 A/R
SLS "Shorty" manifold
Tial 38mm wastgate
2.5" stainless charge piping
550hp bar and plate intercooler
3" stainless downpipe
3" stainless mandrel bent exhaust
All welding/fabrication was done by Ricky at Speedfactory.
I ran out of time on the dyno to do any further tuning beyond my street tune because of troubleshooting - the air filter situation, a misfire(plug wires went bad while on the dyno!), and my drag radials started disintegrating during a pull so we had to abort, unstrap, change to some 17" ricer wheels that were laying around, and restrap.
I had intended on actually tuning it on the dyno, but was only able to do some baseline pulls. Here's the results on a Mustang dyno:
10-11psi = 250whp/184tq
15-16psi = 290whp/???tq
18-19psi = 315whp/261tq
22-23psi = 354whp/276tq-should've been 300tq but boost dipped to 20psi at torque peak.
These pulls were on 103 oct. unleaded, because the car ran low on gas while on the dyno and we had to add 2-3 gallons of whatever was at the dyno shop. The timing maps were not optimized for this fuel, they were from my street tune on 92 octane. AFR's were generally 11.3-11.7 range. Vtec engaging at 5200rpm, revving to 7200-7300rpm.
Here's some charts, the extra line is boost pressure.
18-19psi chart (disregard the rpms- they are ~400rpms off cause we forgot to recalibrate after the wheel change from 14's to 17's):
22-23psi chart (correct rpms):
I'm very happy with it so far. Is this a new record on Vitara's?
Hope to get to the track soon, but w/my little 14" drag radials I'll probably E.T. slower than my old setup although the mph should be good.
There should be more in it with some ignition timing tuning.

i need to get to the dyno, i figure im around the same numbers on vitaras. or at least thats what my trap and e.t's tell me lol! that setup is almost identical to mine, sans manifold and cam! badass numbers though good job!

i knew at some point you were gonna get rid of the greddy setup in favor something more useful
great numbers man.
if you pulled 12.0 w/ a greddy kit, we'll be seeing low 11s, possibly high 10s (??) with this setup.

Nope.. they are not. The are made of a much stronger cast than OEM Honda pistons..Have better ring lands, better oil lubrication and they are floating wrist pin style.

Strap that thing on the dyno again and tune it properly... I can see your torque numbers going up once you adjust the timing a lil..
Question..Was this done with full exhaust or open downpipe?
According to your mods list i can see like 15-20 more ponies from Porting the head,upgrading valvetrain, going with a better IM(Edelbrock) and a bigger TB(62mm ITR)
Full exhaust to Open downpipe its another 10-15whp more

I've witnessed something similar happen to my friends n/a 350.. the filter ended up on a tractor lol..
impressive #'s. good luck with the setup.

Yeah, I was getting bored w/the greddy kit. I hope to to run some 11's at around the 120ish range. But I don't know if my tiny drag radials will put down this power well enough - I may have to get slicks next year. And my clutch/axles probably isn't going to hold up either. We'll see what happens.

These runs were full exhaust (no cat). And I'm thinking the same thing with the mods and timing tuned. I was a little dissapointed in the #'s, but for a crappy stock Y8 head and Z6 intake mani on a base tune it did pretty damn good. I know there's more in it.
About the vitara's:
Yes they have too much wall clearance, and aren't as good as forged pistons, but they still work just fine. Also I did detonate on them pretty badly maybe 4-5 times (playing with timing) with lots of visible aluminum spatter/***** on the plugs, and they held up well- compression is still 160 across the board.
I'll put this in the vitara setups thread later.

how do you like the spool up of the 63 turbine with the 3in DP/exhaust?
get to the track,
since you can drive, you should be well into the 11s,
also, might want to switch to a y8 manifold before your next dyno, they flow little better.
