Re: (smokey2.0)
I think i'm gonna eventually switch to a 4.058 final drive. I'd rather have close ratio gears than a short final drive
It all depends on what I plan on doing with my motor. If i get these special pm0 pistons, then I'll make a high compression d15z1 monster 1.62 r/s ratio with high rpms? who cares
or maybe a deck plated d16 block with a d17 crank and long rods! sleeved to 78mm
oh yeah a 1.8liter d-series lol

so that's great and all, but what does this yield?
well, here ya go:
no bitching about highway rpms (yes, that's 5th gear)

thanks
On a sidenote, I'm starting to get used to the gears + shifting rhythm. It had been such a long time since I have driven my car that I almost forgot what it felt like.
because the rpm drops are much less than stock I find that I don't have to rev as high to keep moving. What I mean is that say on a stock ex trans, you rev to 3000rpm in 2nd gear, shift to 3rd, rpms fall to ~1973rpm. so to keep the rpms above 2000, I need to rev to a little over 3000.
However with my new close-ratio gears, I only have to rev to oh lets see, ~2400rpm to stay above 2000rpm. So it feels really cool driving around town. It's also ESPECIALLY cool on those loud intakes that make peak noise at around 2200, because you can just stay right in that range and make lots of noise for a longer period of time
Or I can just go 1-2-4 and it feels like stock 1-2-3
shift pattern is more like
1 2.5 3.5
2 3 R
rpms on the highway suck, but it's really not that bad. With the d15b vtec it's got the short stroke / long rod combo with the 1.62 r/s ratio. Which will handle the rpms better than a stock d16.
Without looking at the rpm gauge. The engine definitely feels like it has a lot of torque. Which is of no surprise because I knew that this would be the case. I'd be willing to say that with the leverage of greater rpms + gears That this 1.5 liter that yields a very peaky 130hp accels just as quick if not quicker than a much larger displacement F23 with the same hp & much flatter tq curve.
Is it worth it? Definitely. Would I reccomend it? Definitely. I still think that gears are without a doubt the most bang for the buck for whatever vehicle you have. Ask any domestic v8 guy and they'll tell you the same
I'll go to the drag strip soon and I'll do a few test runs of 1-2-3-4 shifting and 1-2-4 shifting to compare the difference

same 1-5 that's found in our 88-91 USDM dx and si transmissions, but the zxi has a 4.4375 final drive. it requires the same axle config that the zc requires.

That is so true! I get a lot of "What's your favorite mod?" questions and I always say.......SHORTER GEARS! Going with a shorter final drive definitely made an immediate difference.
