Nice vid .RJ
Track looks kindof...um....scary
Technical, but scary.
I don't think I would want to take #386 there, with the lack of runoff room. Some of it reminds me of an autocross course. Also seemed very hard on the tires.

Dont leave the track and you wont hit anything
It seemed like front tire death, but the fronts did not show any abnormal wear over the weekend (used Azenis all 3 days).

True! Still a little scary from the video's perspective. I'd run it though, especially in an HPDE. You don't have to go off at an HPDE if you don't want to. Just don't overdrive the car, and pit if your brakes start sucking ... or any other reason you suspect you might lose control of the car.. brain fade etc.
(Nice 'bowl shot' too! hehehe...)

I subscibe to the 'sometimes you don't have a choice' theory.
You don't have to overdrive the car to go off either. And if you've put yourself in a situation where fighting the car excessively is the only way to stay on track, you SHOULD drive off.
You must be a better driver than most of us, as most of us have had offs, and I'd say there are a lot of very capable drivers in this forum.

Yep. My first time was at VIR coming out of Oak Tree. I sorta figured it would happen that weekend, luckily it was in a good spot and the car was unhurt.

I agree with Willard and I would also say not just WHEN but also WHERE. There's always some place at the track you don't want to go off.

Of course, that's probably it. j/k
Well, I mean, I've had 13 consecutive HPDE days without going off or spinning. The exception being my first HPDE, I went off 5-6 times, usually going in too hot (cooked brakes), lifting and spinning at the track-out point going off backwards. One time at the same event, I went off straight and made contact with a tire wall (minor bent sheet metal along passenger side, from bumper to bumper).
So, there's a couple of schools of thought, mine is currently "don't go off." It's working so far. With my limited track experience it may be a bit naive, but I think it's a worthy and attainable goal to test your limits ON the track. I've exceeded the limits many times, gone into turns too fast, apexed early, etc. and not gone off. It could be my cat-like reflexes, but I think it has more to do with car recovery/autox/drift angle control, planning ahead at a corner, and luck of not having severe mechanical failure or spinning on oil/debris that went unnoticed.
YMMV.
-Chris
Edit, speaking of planning ahead, who has a plan for what to do if they notice they have a cut brake line coming up to a corner at 140 MPH? Given enough advance notice (i.e. you tested your brakes before the braking zone), would you e-brake the car sideways? Or backwards? Or go off straight with as much slowing your engine/e-brake can handle? Or steer for the nearest friendly sand pit? I guess it depends on what is on the outside of the corner, or on the inside of the corner too..

Then you're gaining experience - you recognize and correct for the mistakes before they turn into incidents. Many times I will go in too hot, and I just drive 2/4 off and mow some grass rather than trying to 'save' it and keep it on the pavement, no big deal.
