semi o/t How to ship a engine block. Detailed pics inside
I figured I would share how I ship my blocks when needed.
First I get a 2x2 tv box double thick from uhaul
Then I cut a piece of wood to fit the bottom of the box.
Then I go to home depot and get fomular insulation and cut to size.
I then place metal banding from a banding machine into the box
I then place the cut piece of wood in over the banding.
Now place 2 pieces of cut fomular into the box over the wood.
Two!!!
Now the box is ready to be loaded.
I like to place a cloth then cardboard over the deck to protect it and keep it from ripping the contractors grade garbage bag that I put the motor in.
I now then CAREFULLY place the block in the box DECK surface down(dont worry its protected by the wood and 2 layers of fomular + the cloth and cardboard.
This time I filled small cardboard boxes with foam peanuts for filler, because the boxes are so small, it makes them hard to crush.
Next I band the motor down and crimp the locks tightly. Now the motor is attached to the wood on the bottom of the box and cant move . Be sure to shim whatever it is you use to secure the motor down(if you dont have access to a banding crimp) so it doesnt damage your oil pan.
Now cut and line the inside walls of the box with the fomular.
Pack it in good and tight
Now close it up real good with a 100 rolls of tape
And your ready to ship.
This was done with a b18c bottom end(ge sleeves) and with all the packing material it weighed 154lbs, the bare bottom end weighed 138.
Just make sure you tell the ups guy its about 148 lbs because there limit is 150.
Make sure you insure it also.
Hope this helps everyone

That seems to be a good idea, have you done this much? I have never seen an engine packaged in a small Uhaul box!

Supposedly it was $75 for my longblock from NE to TX using Clarke Transportation. The trucker wouldn't unload it for me either, that was my job.

Nice job packaging Tbone , but can you recommend a way to ship out a long block? I just sold my b20/vtec and now I need to ship it to texas. I will be using truck freight to ship my motor but how do I do it? I was told that I need to crate it up in a wooden box but what type of wood do I use and how? I would like to use your way but I need to ship out a long block not a short block. Does U Haul make a bigger box that will fit a long block?
b20guy, was your motor completely secured by the metal bandings on the pallet? That seems like an easy way to ship it but is it safe?
TIA

Looks like a lot of work but i like that a lot better than gettin it on a pallet... That would take a really big box to get the entire motor in huh... See there are reasons why a B series is better than an H... smaller... Don't think you could stuff an H22 in a box... haha latez

Ive been looking at Engine rebuilding shops locally for my motor. Ive been wondering howcome everyone sends their motors out to get built? Is it because your not finding quality shops locally or just because the shops out west are so good at building honda motors?
Ive found a few shops in my area. The one I talked to said they have done a few high power import engines with forced induction and all motor. Any advice on what I should be asking them? Seems like a real hassle to ship a whole block when I can just drop it off down the street.

kinda seems overkill to me, I ship out lots of blocks and Ive never had any problems using double corregated boxes with the block saran wrapped and about 6-8 inches of packing peanuts and a well taped box.
and even all that costs me about 15 dollars for the packing material alone.
10 dollars for the heavy duty box, and about 5 for the peanuts.
However, single walled box wont hold up to the abuse otherwise.

Re: semi o/t How to ship a engine block. Detailed pics inside (irev210)
Yeah and i have had 4 blocks shipped to me your(similar) way and there a freaking mess when I get them, peanuts jammed everywhere, a bitch to unpack , and they all have had some sort of minor shipping damage.
I know the value of every dollar I spend, and my way costs about 20 in material. So for the extra 5 dollars I feel that much more comfortable. To each his own though.
You know what , if more people took the time and detail of things like I do, the quailty of the final product would turn out much better. ( sorry my emotions took over there.)

I work at ups and will tell you that tbones packaging will withstand any mishaps much better than peanuts would, especialy when people pack the bottom and sides but not the top. Also be very generous with tape, too many times we get people who ship heavy things with 2-3 strips of tape....also pack it so that orientation arrows dont mean dick, because to us they dont. Great writeup, definately worth the $20.

Incredible job, that is definitely the way everyone should do it.
I wish mine came that well packed, it was tossed on a wooden pallet and strapped down with bungy cords and plastic wrapping! I am just glad I got it in one piece, but it did sustain minor nuisance damage. If it was something more than just a d16, I probably would have been a bit pissed about it.
**Saving this to my notepad, in case I ever need to ship a block/head out. Thanks tbone.
