Default My adventures in modding: a "Blog" of sorts

Well, as a few of you know... I'm just getting myself into starting to do some work on my civic. Starting off relatively light and moving on to bigger and better things. I'm, very much, a beginner or 'n00b', if you will.

This thread is something that I am going to try to update regularly with pictures/descriptions of the things I have done. It will not be nearly as detailed as a
DIY, so dont rely on this to complete your mods.

However, with each section(mod), I will post before/after pics and a link to a DIY thread (if I used one). I do want to apologize ahead of time for the relatively crappy picture quality... but my camera isnt that good.... and im not a good photographer.

If anyone has and comments, questions, suggestions, criticism, etc.. please feel free to post. As I said, I'm a beginner... so I have a lot to learn. This is basically my way of documenting everything that I'm learning.

FYI, the car is a 2006 ASM FG1 EX. Below is a picture that is from the day I got it (May 13, 2006)

And here... a more recent picture of the whole vehicle.

Annnnnd, here we go.

Mod #1 (March 2007):
Technically, the first 'mod' I did was quite a while ago. I bought a K&N Drop-In filter for my car. I dont have before/after pics for this mod... because well... there isnt really any visible difference. No DIY here... way too simple.

Mod #2 (August 5, 2007):
Front License plate flip (Click for the DIY used) - This was VERY easy. Only took roughly 10 minutes, and thats because I couldnt find my Knife. Not much else ot say here, except im quite pleased with the outcome.

Mod #3 (August 5, 2007):
Debadge the 'Civic' logo on trunk. (Click for DIY). Not much to say about this... again. Very common and very basic.

Mod #4 (August 5, 2007):
Custom welcome message on stereo LCD. (Click for DIY)

This mod is terribly easy and was started and finished in under 2 mins. Neat little way to customize your vehicle.

I didnt take a 'before' pic... but it just read "Welcome" on the LCD. Now it displays as follows...

Mod #5 (8/17/2007):
Clear Headlights/Amber insert removal. (Click for DIY).
- SO, I finally got this one done... and damn am I pleased with the result. This was by far the most 'intense' mod Ive done thus far. Taking off the bumper was a trek in its own. I think i ruined about 1/2 the plugs before figuring out how they worked. But its ok because the bumper is still on pretty damn solidly. Baking the headlights was pretty easy, just nerve-wrecking. I could easily do this again if I had to, it just takes some time. One thing I would caution people on is to be VERY careful when handling the pieces after youve seperated them. That damn sealant gets EVERYWHERE!

Anyways, updated pics. I still have to get a better one of just the headlights afterwards. but the one i have shall suffice for now.

Mod #6 (8/13/2007):
Replace stock muffler with OEM Si AxleBack (click here for DIY):
- Well, some part that I bought finally arrived today. One of those was my Si AxleBack. Now, this was my first 'real' mod that I did all by myself. CHuckle if you must, but I'm quite proud of myself. The whole mod, start to finish was about 45 minutes, but thats only because I couldnt find my 12mm socket. Once i found that, it took me about 30mins to jack up, swap and clean up.

So, without futher a-do... pictures!!

Mod #7 (8/15/2007)
Replace OEM Downpipe with Megan Downpipe. (No DIY)
- I actually had a shitty experience the previous night trying to install my downpipe. I got it all jacked up, rolled under, got the oem downpipe front end off using a 12mm socket, then went to go do the back end and the bolts were a bit bigger, so i go to check my tools (well, my dads tools)... and we didnt have the right size in metric. so i had to bolt the front back on and lower the car back down. all the stores were closed by that time, so ill have to wait till tomorrow to go pick up a good metric socket set. It was a complete waste of time. The following afternoon, when I got home from work, I went out and got the proper tools for the job. Once I had the tools it was just as easy as the OEM Si AxleBack. The whole thing took me about 30 minutes to do from start to finish.

Sorry, no 'before' or 'after' pictures... it was too hard to try and squeeze my camera in under the car and get good images. But here are the 2 downpipes side-by-side:

Mod #8 (8/17/2007):
Tinted windows - (No DIY)
- I went to Pruven Performance and got my windows tinted. 35% on the sides, 20% in the rear.

No 'before' picture... because theres plenty above that show the previous windows.

Heres a picture of what the sides look like now:

Mod #9 (8/20/2007)
Install K&N Typhoon Short Ram Intake (No DIY, just in box instructions)
- So, I planned on making a DIY for this, but I lost my cameraman about 1/4 of the way into the project and didnt have enough hands to make useful pictures. But, I got it installed... eventually. Yea, so... the instructions in the box... theyre definately NOT 100% correct. Id say they are about 80% helpful. Most of the pictures and descriptions are helpful, but a bunch of them are just like "OMGWTF!?!?!".

Needless to say, it turned into me mostly doing like a puzzle and using the instructions as a vague guide. But, from start to finish, it took about 2hrs. But boy... when it was done, i felt real good. It sounds MUCH better than before and I can feel the little bit of extra power, a lot, in the 2nd/3rd gear range. My 'off the line' speed isnt drastically changed, but the pull from about 3 or 4 seconds in is 10-fold better than it previously was.

When i get the chance this week Ill get some more/new sound/video clips... but for now... ics:

Mod #10 (8/25/2007)
Install Tein S-Tech Lowering Springs (Click for DIY)

Attempt #1:
- Well, this was, by far, the most frustraing attempt at a mod that Ive done as of yet... and I thought the SRI was a pain because of the generally unhelpful pictures.

Well, I rented spring compressors from AutoZone (which is free if anyone didnt know. they just give you all of the deposit money back when you return the tools), went home, jacked up my front passenger side (6:50pm), removed the tire, unbolted the strut and took it off.

The time was now 7:15pm. By 7:30, we (nmy best friend and i) had realized that the compressor I got was not what we needed. We needed strut compressors.... so, back to AutoZone to swap tools. Back from autozone at about 8:15.

By 8:30 we have the spring compressed and the top of the strut moves freely... only now, some of the ***** from the ball bearing are falling out. From here, all we needed to do was get the nut on the top of the strut off and put the new spring on... easier said than done.

We tried for 45 minutes to get the nut off and it didnt budge at all. Compressing and uncopmpressing and everything we could think of without ruining the strut and/or stripping the nut or our tools. So we decided to just give up at about 9pm and put it back together.... again, easier said than done.

We loosened up the springs and went to put it back on my car... only to find out that when we uncompressed it, we hadnt lined the spring back up to the proper spots on the strut. So, we had to compress again, and realign the spring on the strut. Then loosen the springs again.

Now, at 9:30 we get the strut back in place and have it held there by loosely tightened bolts on the top. Only now, it doesnt even come close to fitting back into the brake fitments. We fiddle with it for a solid 20 minutes before getting it to even sit properly.

Then we bolt it back up, put the wheel back on and lower the car. At this point, it is now 10pm and We're beyond frustrated... but we take the car for a test drive to make sure we put the strut back on and assembled it properly (even though we're missing a bunch of ***** from the bearing).

It sounded and felt fine. I am however taking my car somewhere today to have it looked at just to make sure we re-assembled it properly, and Im bringing a cup filled with the ***** that fell out of the bearing with me... and Im probably just going to have them install my springs for me.

So yea, that was my night. Then we went inside and had a few beers to :chill:

Sorry for the long read, but I had to share the experience.

Update on this debacle:
-So, I took my car to the stealership today and told them this:

"I took my car to a shop to have them install some new springs that I bought. But they didnt get very far. As soon as they took the first strut off, they stopped because the top was not held together properly and some ***** from the bearings were falling out. They secured it back together and said I had to take it to the dealership to get it fixed."

This was a blatant lie (in an attempt to get them to cover it under warranty) because it just didnt look right to me and I thought it was broken. So I put it back together and brought it to the dealer.

So, I drove down the road a bit to the dealer and got them to look at it. They said would need a whole new strut assembly and that it wouldnt be here until Wednesday because they have to order it. They also informed me that because someone other than a honda tech took it off, it is not covered under warranty because they cant prove that it was defective and that it didnt get ruined by the person who took it off.

I expected this, so it wasnt that upsetting, though it sucks that I now have to pay for a $200 strut and about $170 in labor for them to put it on, when I can do it myself. But they told me it wouldnt be covered under warranty if I installed it myself. So Im just going to have them do it.

Needless to say, my spring installation is now on hold for a little while until I get this all sorted out.

Attempt #2 (Success!):
As it turns out, that dealer was just trying to **** me over. They never even took the wheel off. They just went by what I was telling them. I managed to get a hold of my neighbor today, who is a certified Porsche mechanic. He took a look at my strut and it was fine. We had all the ***** form the bearing anyways, i found them and kept them in a cup. We popped them back in and it was fine. Then we finished putting my springs on. So its all good now. Im canceling my order on the strut on Monday morning.

Getting my alignment done on Monday as well because there is a BIG difference in the camber now and I wanna get that taken care of.

I was actually about to make an update and post the before/after pictures.... but I need to get a better 'after' picture. The ones I have right now are hard to notice the difference.

Now... PICS!!!

Mod #11 (08/30/2007):
Install ASM OEM Si Grille (Click for DIY)

There isnt much to say here. This mod was terribly easy. Just take the bumper off, unscrew the factory grille, take it off, putt he Si grille on and tigthen up the screws then throw the bumper back on. Easy as pie. I am SOOOO pleased with how this looks. Its 10,000x better than the stock look. One thing to note, I did take the 'Si' emblem off because I do not have an Si. I personally HATE when people have 'Si' on a car that is in fact... not and Si. To see what I did with the leftover bracket... see the next mod.

Total time: 15 Minutes.

For a "Before" pic, you can just see any of the pictures previous to this where the grille is shown.

New Rims/Tires
- These are the Rims/Tires I bought and installed this weekend. They are 2006 Acura RSX Tpe-S rims/tires with genuine JDM 'H' centercaps. Much love to BlueRocket for hookin' me up with these.

Random Pics and Vids:

-- These videos are for those who want to know what a stock EX sounds like after installing a Megan Downpipe and OEM Si AxleBack:

Heres some pictures from a small shoot my brother did for me today. Hes a MUCH better photographer than I and he just got back from a month in Ireland. Too bad he leaves for college again in 2 weeks. Im gonna try to get him to do one more with me before he goes, after i get my wheels and springs on... and after a good wash.

Thanks for posting the links for the DIY's - especially that front license plate flip - I never realized how much I hated where the front plate is positioned until I saw it redone! I've got a day off tomorrow and I just got my plates from the dealership today...sounds like a perfect opportunity to try it out!

Keep us posted, would love to see what all you finally come up with.

Yea, the DIYs are very helpful and it wouldnt be right to not give credit where credit is due. Good luck w/ the mod. Its very easy yet a much more appealing look.

Why is it that ppl think it is cool to knock others like this? I don't post a lot but I do read almost every post. He is new to the board and new to the vehicle, thus still has some excitement to get out of his system. Let him.

Yea, they came alright!

Too bad i got my car all jacked up and everything, got the front of the downpipe off, slide tot he back end of it... then realized those bolts were bigger, and we didnt have the proper sized socket-wrench. I had to abandon that one for the night.
