FIRST decide on the tire size and model you plan to use. THEN find out what rim widths it's approved for mounting on.

If your '97 del sol is a del sol S or a del sol Si, then the best 16" tire sizes for your car are 195/45-16 or 205/40-16. If it's a del sol VTEC, then the best 16" tire size for your car is 205/45-16.

Most tires that are 195/45-16 or 205/45-16 can be mounted on rims from 6.5 to 7.5 inches wide (and some on 6.0). Most 205/40-16 tires can be mounted on rims from 7.0 to 8.0 inches wide.

Yes, but ONLY with 205/40-16 tires, and ONLY if the wheels have the proper offset to position the tires for maximum clearance.

Things would be a lot easier for you if you just get 16x7 rims, which will allow more tire choices because you can use other sizes. For street use, there's no significant advantage in 16x8 rims instead of 16x7.

So a 1" wider rim has a 1-1/4" wider lip? That probably means it has some heavy offset. I would look at the offset numbers before you do anything else.
