Aftermarket tuner lug nuts on OEM wheels
How does this affect performance and durability? I heard you're not suppose to it. What are the potential risks? Are there ways around it?

Re: Aftermarket tuner lug nuts on OEM wheels (brandobot89)
because the lug seat in the wheel and the lug cone wont be shaped the same, you end up with a vast reduction in the surface area between the two. maintaining the same torque on the lug nuts, while reducing contact area by (rough guesstimate, no factual data to back this up simply going off observing the shape/tapers) 75% will quadruple the pressure on a given point. such an astronomical increase in pressure will undoubtedly lead to premature failure of the lugs as well as possibly damaging the wheels
what gain do you expect by switching to tuner lugs? theyre lighter but only slightly: in regards to unsprung weight- ounces off the lugs wont matter when you have generally heavy OEM wheels and tires, and in regards to rotational mass- theyre very near the center of rotation so they have a very low polar moment of inertia (little effect on rotation)
as far as a way around it, you could probably have a machine shop drill the lug seats to a tapered style instead of the stock acorn, but I have no idea how much that would cost or the long term effects on the wheel. it also seems an aweful lot of effort just to be able to use different lug nuts.

Re: Aftermarket tuner lug nuts on OEM wheels (Voyage34)
Thanks Voyage.
Well i'm mainly wanting aftermarket because of the different colors they offer. Red, blue, gunmetal, black, etc..
I've been looking for lug nuts that'll fit the oem wheels better but havn't been able to find them.
I heard the only main problem is the lug nuts seem to get loose over time. Can I get away with just re-tightening my lug nuts every here and there?

With the wrong shaped lug nuts, there is no area that the lug nuts come into contact. They come into contact only around a circle, not over an area. So the reduction in area is 100 percent.

No. It is unsafe to use the wrong shaped lug nuts. As you note, they do tend to get loose, because they are not holding the wheel in contact over an area. This makes it very possible for the wheel to come off. JUST DON'T DO IT.
If you really want colored lug nuts, look for ones with the ball-shaped seat that Honda/Acura wheels need. You can get chrome-finished ones for just over a buck apiece at your local Autozone or most other auto parts stores. You can get black ones at your local Acura dealer; ask for part number 90304-SA7-811 ($5.50 each list, or you can get them for $4.38 each at Delray Acura).

is there a way around it? having a shop cut stuff to make it possible to use rays lug nuts safely on oem wheels?

It's not possible. After any cutting or shaving off of the nuts, they will be unsafe to use. Even if they can fit on the rims after mod, the nuts will be weakened and not fit for use.
