Default Tach signal, is it linear 0-Xvolts, or pulses?

Just wondering what the signal from the tach looks like (too much hassle to haul an oscilliscope out to the car if anybody here knows off hand.) I'm designing a LED tachometer for our FSAE car

its a pulse signal, digital on/off, same, runs off the negative side of the coil so same signal as that.

I'm pretty sure it's a square wave signal.
