Good beginners tig welder.....
Interested in picking up a tig welder. I been playing around with my buddy 200 but honestly don't wanna spend $3k unless I really have to. I was looking into weld all type of products not just car parts but only wanna mess with metals such as. Ss, aluminum, and
Titanium. I understand these metals are hard to weld and take years. but this is just a hobby and will do this on my own time.
I was looking into the lincoln tig or picking up used 200. But would like to know what you guys think. It def has to be noobie friendly lol. I dont wanna a complicated juice box. What is a very good, noobie friendly, reasonable price tig that think best fits me?.......

A lot of guys here use the Miller Diversion 165, and I'm one of them. Really easy, turn it on, select your amperage, select DC/AC, and weld. Great starter TIG, but you'll start wanting a bit more after about a year if you really get into it.

I haven't moved up yet actually, the extra features will certainly be nice to have but since I don't do this on a professional level the Diversion more than handles anything that I need to do at home. The rest is just up to me lol.

Re: Good beginners tig welder.....
I would go for a maxstar instead of the diversion. Diversions kinda suck and none of the accesories will work on a dynasty when you decide that the diversion is a pos. otherwise i would look at thermal arc or esab welders if you want more features in the price range of the diversion.

Re: Good beginners tig welder.....
I've used my buddy's diversion a few times and I thought it was great for the price he paid for it. Seems like it would do everything that I would need a tig welder for, but then again I'm not hardcore into fabricating so take it for what it's worth.

I've had great luck out of my used syncro 200. You can get them from 1-1.5k slightly used.
I do feel like you will be better off in the end with something like that. There can be advantages in a 2.5k used machine over a 1.5k new machine.
However I don't feel like you could go wrong with a new diversion 165 or 180 either. The consumables can be had very easily at your local welding supply store. Its a Miller so you can bet you will get years of trouble free service out of it. May have a decent warranty as well.
In the race fab industry, I can't think of much that you wont be able to do with it either. My syncro 200, I leave it on 150. It has a few features the diversion may not have like a removable torch, pulse, ac balance, etc. However those are features that most don't use, you can get by without and simply are not needed. My first tig, I didn't have all that, and I am thankful I learned with out it. Now that I have it, there are some decent benefits that I rarely use, welds close to the same.

I learned to TIG in high school on a Precision 275, awesome machine and easy to use. Self contained water cooler, too.
I just bought a lincoln squarewave 255 now that I'm out of school, has a touch panel, 315amp capability, pulse, ac/dc. I paid $1200 for it, minus gas bottle/extensions/consumables.

Re: Good beginners tig welder.....
I am also looking into getting my first tig welder. For those who have the miller diversion 165 or 180. Has the welder ever overheated or acted up when welding for a good period of time?

Re: Good beginners tig welder.....
Im upgrading to a bigger machine. As a lot of people, i didnt know if i would catch on to it well or not. So this is a great welder to spend a lil bit of cash, and figure out whether its for you or not. Im glad i got it, because without experience welding its hard to judge what you want out of a machine. Probably getting an HTP 221.

Re: Good beginners tig welder.....
Just sold my diversion for $1100 and ordered the htp 221 yesterday. But as tanner said the diversion is a great starter for me but I've had mine for 2 years it's time to up grade.
