Default Flash burn questions

Today in TIG class I accidently kicked the pedal while inspecting a weld with my hood up. I definatly saw a big flash. How do you know if you have been flash burned. I dont feel anything but it was only 2 hours ago. Is there any tricks to making it heal faster.

OOOHHH ****. You'll know .About 1 or 2 in the morning it will feel like you got some small slivers of glass in your eye.And &%ck does it hurt. But you probably didn't get a flash burn from one little flash. It takes a little more than that to get one .Like welding inside a big stainless wine tank with two people welding .The reflection off the inside of the tank will get you REAL bad.I know.If you got it .The best thing is to get drunk and pass out.Because when you move your eyes ,OH ****.You just want to die. Engliod Lets hear one from you.Hurts don't it.

i burnt my eyes in my stick welding class. i never did it to myself but it was from helping out another guy and getting hit by the arc from the guy beside us. it feels like sand is thrown in your eyes. they will be a little sore at first. but then when you wake up in the morning they will burn. mine went away the next morning. it only hurt for a day. now it depends how long you were in the arc. but just getting hit by it once or twice i wouldnt expect it to hurt in the morning

I argee with RMF...

When you flash yourself, you will blink pretty fast or look away. Unless you do this about 10 times in a day, you'll not burn your eyes. However, if you're welding next to somebody and some of the rays are bouncing off things around you and into your eyes all day... well, you'll probably feel it before you go home. By about 8pm or maybe in the middle of the night, it will feel like there's so much sand in your eyes that they're not wet anymore.

The only thing you can do to relieve the pain is to close your eyes and push the push gently on your eyeball, as if pushing it into your head. I don't know why, but this seems to numb it a little for me. I have heard of some drops you can get that will make the pain go away immediately..but I've never remembered to ask the doctor for any...and when you got burned, it's too late to go to the doctor.

So...if you burned your eyes, you won't have to ask how you know when you burned them.

Personal story:
I hired in a job and the company had welded 16" pipe with no gap and no purge. Of course they said it was by contract, and that the company decided they wanted it full penetration. They wanted me to crawl up inside of it and "backweld" it. This is in many cases an acceptable way of achieving a full penetration weld (welding both sides). Anyway, being IN stainless steel pipe, the arc reflected all around my hood, in the back and all. By about 6pm, I had my daughter in the car and could barely hold my eyes open to drive us home.

Oh, and the burn pain will likely be gone by your next work day...but you will have not gotten much sleep at all.

I worked at a plant once where a guy called in sick, saying he burned his eyes. He called in Thursday, Friday, weekend passed, and then he called in Monday and Tuesday too...and the idiot bosses were talking about how me must have burned them really bad. I told the lead man (who wouldnt have ratted him out anyway) that if he'd burned them bad enough to be out of comission for 6 days that he'd likely never see again. Well, Wednesday rolled around and the guy came in and got his tools and quit....he was just trying out a new job for a few days before quitting.

It's not all that hard unless you can't fit in the pipe.

Of course it wasn't welds that I'd be too proud of, but they were acceptable by the codes they were being inspected by.

you will know.. I got it once. By reflection exactly.

Ive been flashed by arc and mig machines many times, but you look away or close your eyes quickly. And just see a glowing light for a second or two aftewards when you blink..

You will know if you get it.. And when you do any light you look at hurts like a %*%*$

hmmm

I didnt even know this existed. When i first got my welder; like the second day i had it after i put all my **** up and went inside my eyes burned like no tomorrow; they got real red and hurt no matter what.

I figured it was because of the cheap *** welding rods i used while ******* around with an arc welder (2 year old rods that have been stored in the open in an outside barn dont work too well). I guess it was flash burn.
I've since arc welded (though not as long as the first time) but no eye iritation. And i've never had a problem mig welding; though the other day my eyes kinda tingled a bit but i spent like 4 hours messing around with my friends auto darkening helmet. I think the speed on that thing is only about 1/4 of a second :-/
It sucks but my only other option is the little handheld shield that came with my lincoln pro-mig And being able to use 2 hands is worth the irritation imo

If you're getting even irritation that often, you have a BIG problem. It is far from worth it when you consider that you're losing your vision slowly.

this kid, who was rather stupid, decided to weld outside of the both, my friend walked by not even paying attention to the fact that the kid was welding there, turned around and just, i dunno, got hit hard

like i said his helmet is slow to react...

It wasn't that bad yesterday when i bought a new gas difuser (broke a tip off in the other one so my welder was down a week while i replaced that and got more mig wire). Maybe it was just coincidence?

have you ever heard of bad welding rods causing eye iritation?

i dont think it was the welding rods, just your lack of eye protection

what sort of eye protection do you need besides a welding helmet

when i was arc welding tha ttime the irritation was so bad i was using my ghey *** lincoln hand shield; so no short flashes of light t hru the auto helmet.

My 1500sq ft barn was FILLED with smoke from those rods; and they'd all catch on fire after using them for so long....
