DIY/Custom Exhaust builds thread
I didn't see one here, so I thought it'd be cool to show off custom exhausts. Everybody gets hung up on looks and buys into the latest trend. Sometimes that just doesn't work, and something custom has to be built! Show off your custom built exhaust systems!
I'll start.
My bro needed (wanted) a new muffler for his 1990 DB1 Integra. The problem is, it's either rare to find a 'good' exhaust, or expensive. His muffler was rusting out and it was time for a new one. He purchased a Flowmaster 'bolt in' axleback kit...bolt in shortly became custom after it was discovered that the piping is not quite right.
This piece is what caused us to decide to weld in rather than bolt in the exhaust: The piping right behind the flange is about 2" too long. Nothing a cutoff wheel can't fix.
Blue tape is the amount we were cutting off.
Forgive the crappy welding on the inlet side of the muffler, it was my first time welding under a car. The outlet side was done off the car once I tacked it, I wanted to try welding in a confined space. It looks messy but it was fully sealed.
This was supposed to be the finished product. In typical fashion that is the curse of this car, nothing goes right. That rolled tip my brother is putting on broke off as he was tightening the bolt, looks like a bad weld where the clamp was tacked on.
So for $20 we bought a bro truck exhaust tip with some fabrication ideas in mind. Note the use of eBay coils for exhaust tip fit-up help. They do have a use after all!
Just a bit long here..
Easily enough welded on..
We cut the tip down about a bit and at a lesser angle of 30* vs 45*. Hindsight, maybe we should have gone 20*.
Welding it on..
Finished Product:
He's happy with it, and I got to weld something together other than a couple pieces of scrap metal for school. I wish I had some more pics, but I wasn't planning on posting this.

see the "cat-back" I did for my EJ6 here.
here is how is lays out next to the stock system before I got started.
My goals were:
-a free-flowing system that would support 2.3L and up to 250hp or so at a minimal expense
-something on which to practice my welding technique (all done with flux-core)
-good sound and decent looks that won't attract much attention. subtlety as a virtue.
-a system that bolts in as easily as the stock system and is easy to remove or modify in the future.
all goals achieved. I'm quite happy with the results.
the muffler was so inexpensive and easy to remove that I've considered keeping variations on hand to have different sounds to suit my whim ...quiet for commuting, less quiet for mountain weekends, meeting minimum requirements for the track...

Re: DIY/Custom Exhaust builds thread
I see a lot of titanium dump tubes and stuff now. What's the point in doing something like that in titanium - besides the bling? It's something 11 gauge aluminum could handle, and the weight difference between that and 304 can't be that much. Especially on wg dumps. It seems like such a waste. I totally understand if you had it as "scrap" from a customers project.

It's not a waste at all in my mind and I don't care if you think it is, it's a free country and you're entitled to your opinion. When it comes down to it, the only person who has to like it is me anyways.

the project on my 86 Accord Hatch, it's gone through several changes since I started the thread, started with a really rare S&S header for the A20 and everything back, including the muffler is fabricated http://www.3geez.com/forum/restorati...header-12.html

Being different for the sake of being different and testing myself to see what I'm capable of. Like you said, it can be done in ally or stainless which is what most people do, but you hardly see ti parts like this built, let alone something that large diameter and that many pie cuts. I've always wanted to do a ti exhaust of some sort and this was the most cost effective option. Realistically, most people will look right by it, but the few people who appreciate it for what it is will make it worth it.

No malice taken, sorry if I came across a bit brash in my response. It's all what someone wants and is willing to pay for.

Re: DIY/Custom Exhaust builds thread
Some 3" stainless downpipe with transition to 4" aluminum exhaust and muffler, entire exhaust and muffler weighs less than the downpipe.

Re: DIY/Custom Exhaust builds thread
hard to say, this aluminum exhaust is on a rb25det swapped 240sx. Soooooo, it really sounds good. Deep, not raspy, but most of it is due to it being turbo'd. I'm sure if it was na, it be pretty annoying. But the muffler is only 10" long and 6" in diameter. I haven't done any aluminum exhaust for na cars. When I do, I usually do the largest magnaflow muffler for a resonator, along with the tail section muffler. I did a ek civic one that sounded really good, deep and relatively quiet. I'll try to post pics.
