I got a question for you.. say if i want to lay out a front lip w/ brake duct. Do you recommend making a mold out of the original lip using the rubber compound then lay CF fiber over it? or wax the original lip, lay down the CF and vacuum bag it ?
What's a good size CF fabric to use ? and how many plies would be sufficient ?

Nice work ehoward!

i would wax the original lip, lay down some carbon(fiberglass right now) and then bag it to make a mold.

We use the 3K 2X2 twill carbon.

Can't really say how many plies to use.

Resin, polyester or epoxy. Of course you have to abrade and clean the roof correctly but it's not a big deal.

First let me say I have been researching for some time to be able to do CF work on my car, Great site!!

Sorry I'm not a Honda Guy but I'm building a Lamborghini Diablo Roadster from scratch. http://www.jtm311.com

The part I'm going to make out of CF is this part. This is already a FG piece and what would you say is the best way to mold this? I will vacuum bag this, only because I have the stuff at work. Keep up the great work all.

it seems easy enough when your working on a female/male molds, but how do you adhere two pieces together. i was going to also purchase this set of videos to help me get into fabbing with composites....

has anybody seen any of these?

I would take off the buttons. I would then fill in the holes with a body filling compound(like bondo). I would then paint it(not with rattlecan) and wet sand the whole thing smooth. I would make a base for the part out of wood so that you have an inch or so of flange area around the part for when you make the mold.

I would then do the lay up so you get a mold with a nice flange. Then take the part off of that.

Good luck with your project.

Rumor I hear is DVD release on the 1 year anniversary of this thread.

Since there has been so much interest on carbon fiber I posted a tutorial starting with simple techniques as Part I. The next part wll deal with some techniques for molds and tubes. Look under the news section and click on the carbon fiber tutorial. Have fun! Morgan http://www.synapsemotorsport.com
