Default Anyone take ASE Machinist Cert Test ?

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has taken these tests. I signed up to take them for the November testing dates. Just looking for info on the tests, how they were and what not, I don't know anyone that has taken any of the machinists tests.

There are three individual certifications ...

Cylinder Head Specialist, Cylinder Block Specialist, and Assembly Specialist.

I only signed up for one of them as I also have a couple certifications left for my Master Tech certification that I'm taking at the same time as well. I plan to take the other machinist test in the winter computer testing session.

I think my brother was a certified cylinder head specialist but that was 10 years ago.

I don't think you have to know as much as an actual machinist but you got to know how it applies to engines and such.

I know a lot of ASE sample tests and questions are available online, have you been able to find anything specifically from the machining test?

Ya they have sample questions on ASE's website. I'm just looking for first hand opinions on the test.

I did all the tests that were available at the time (about 15 years ago).At that time the answers were outdated practices.I really hope they have update they're accepted procedures.I don't think more than a handful of people on this site have seen a piston knurler. If you have worked in the industry you shouldn't have any issue.Just like any standardized test you need to have a little time management and play the odds on the question that don't appear to have any right answer.Employers and customers do like to see certificates in the waiting room.I think they carry more weight in the service tech sector than machinists.I never felt the need to stay updated with the testing.

I completely agree. The one place they do make a difference is at a bank trying to get money outta them for a shop.

It's foolish to compare a certified ASE tech to a non-ASE cert tech. I have A1-A8 + L1 and I'm woudn't get the pay and respect I get without it. It's not a doctorate degree by any means but its a requisite for the work I do.

At the end of the day I can walk out of work knowing that I have what less than 10% of the guys I work with have and I'd consider myself to be the least likely to get terminated in the case of company downsizing or layoffs. With today's economy the more you can proove to your employer of your importance, the higher the stability of your position in the company.
