Always feels good when this happens...
Note to self, don't use your body as a ground. Shocked the crap outta myself today tacking up the swingarm for my bike.
Best part about it was that I had my father holding the tube for me so it got him too.
Nothing like feeling current running through your body, good for the heart too I've heard
So what about you guys? What's your worst shocked when welding story?

I worked welding large cryogenic pressure vessels. The foot pedal had wheels as did my chair, I had hung my torch over the chair back and walked away with the machine running. When I returned, I placed my bare hands on the project and extended my leg under it to hook my heel on the pedal and pull it towards me. The project, also on wheels moved a bit, when it did I lost my balance a bit and sat in the chair. The 1/16 electrode went into my thigh. When that happened, with the pedal now under my foot, I tried to jump up and upon doing so, slammed the pedal "to the metal" as they say... got quite a shock and some burns.

I knew someone working on a commercial service and they set tools on the TOP of the panel. and they fell inbetween the hots and melted half his arm and face. he got really messed up. Please if you ever do electrical never put tools above you.

This is why i always try to get into the habbit of wearing a arc flash suite. To many it seems silly but for those that never had a second chance they might be around today if they had one on.

Re: Always feels good when this happens...
Was doing some stick welding and set the whip with a rod still in it down on the all steel work bench. The ground was to my left and the whip was to my right, touched the table with my thighs cause I had to lean in to get a hold of the block I was welding. Zaaap! I couldn't really feel my groin area for about 15 minutes. I went to the bathroom to check on the goods and thankfully they were unharmed. But the weird thing was, the rod wasn't arcing on the table surface. I've also cooked my fingers, literally cooked them while welding and tacking things on. Like I mean my fingers would look like a finished side of chicken breast, thats how white they were.

I was laying a 3'-4' bead and grabbed the goose neck of the gun. It had a short in the handle. Pulled me into my work and shocked me pretty good. Pulled so hard I thought it broke my arm for a second.
Non-electrical. But had a big piece of hot slag go through my boot and burn a hole in the top of my foot.

Been there done that, overhead torching ftl. What really sucked about it was the 4 layers I had to take off before I could finally take my boot off and free myself from the molten slag.

Not to be confused with "THE MAN"
Re: Always feels good when this happens...
I used to build large custom metal stairs/ect. Well while reaching through the spacing in the balustrade to seam up a platform my helper kicked the ground off while my arm was resting on the balustrade. Nice bit of 3phase 220 running through me, had a burn mark on my bicep where it touched. Has since been tattooed over to cover the scars.

Re: Always feels good when this happens...
I was welding an engine mount in with a thumbwheel once, someone came behind me to scare me on purpose (roommate), and I flinched and put the tungsten into the filler rod. Of course the wheel doesn't go back to off when you let go, so I got a nice little shock. Also was working on my Sync 500 once trying to troubleshoot some problems it was having internally. I had my hand in the machine probing some wires, and I slipped a little and started to get shocked. My hand shorted out the circuit for the (unplugged previously) fan, which started to spin up. All I could think was damnit my hand is gonna go right in there, so all I can do is try to fall backwards onto the floor away from the welder. Then the building breaker blew, I was quite relieved!

Re: Always feels good when this happens...
Worst shock ever was when I was rushing trying to finish an intercooler end tank. Customer wanted 1/8" thick end tanks so I just mashed the pedal to get things going. Ground was laying over my leg, I placed my bare hand on the IC to steady it and ZWAP!! My teeth hurt for 3 days afterwards and I had a nice little tick in my leg.
Lesson learned, I never weld without gloves and double checking my ground now.

Re: Always feels good when this happens...
I wired up a 220 volt outlet for my welder in my shop, and I didnt have a coverplate for it so I just said screw it how bad can it be just dont touch around the sides of the plug right? well to turn on my overhead lights I have an extension cord ran down from the ceiling it happens to hang right next to the 220 outlet and one night I went out to work and was just blind feeling for the extension cord and next thing I know I was on my *** and the breaker was tripped. needless to say there is a coverplate on it now.

Re: Always feels good when this happens...
Worst shock I ever had was crawling around inside a huge aluminum frame work tig welding in all kinds of jacked up positions. Somehow my ground fell off while I was wedged in some god awfull postion welding. The second I hit the finger control a couple hundred amps shot right into one of my earings.Brunt the hell out of my ear and froze me up for what seemed like forever but was in reality a fraction of a sec. I HATE that feeling of "freezing up" from electrical shock.
