Integra Type-R Transmission Rebuild & Diagnosis
I’ve done some research, but I want to get closer to my own situation.
I’m planning to rebuild my 2001 Type-R transmission (LSD) and I’ve already pulled the swap, set the transmission up, and separated the transmission shell. Now I’m looking at my gears, synchronizers, and all the other stuff on the inside. I am deciding what rebuild kit I should go with. I know synchros are one of the basic things I should replace while I’m inside, but I want to know if I should replace more than just the synchros. On the synchrotech website, there are different rebuild kits that I can go with. Carbon Master Kit for $700 that includes: 1-5 Pro-Series Carbon Lined Synchros, 1-5 synchro springs, brass reverse synchro and spring, 1-5 slider sleeves, 5 shaft bearings, bearing clip, 2 axle seals, input seal, shift rod seal, and a new dust boot.
Then, there is also the Carbon Rebuild Kit for $400 that includes: 1-5 Pro-Series Carbon Lined Synchros, 1-5 synchro springs, brass reverse synchro and spring, 5 shaft bearings, bearing clip, 2 axle seals, input seal, shift rod seal, and a new dust boot.
What does a bad slider sleeve look like? Will an extra $300 for a 1-5 slider set be needed? What should I worry about replacing, or be looking for while I check things? I have some pictures, but I need to know what to look for. One of these gears has some wear all the way around it. I have drawn red arrows to point at marks of wear. If I remember correctly, 3rd & 4th had a scratch going in at any RPM. (If that serves any help)
Anyways, let me know guys and help me diagnose everything that needs work. Please & thank you.

You really need to get it apart and get a good look at all of the teeth on the hubs and the rings, preferably with a magnifying glass or loupe unless your vision is amazing. Make sure you can move them over the hubs smoothly. For the extra $300 peace of mind I'd do the hubs while you're in there, unless yours are absolutely perfect. A beat up sleeve will just beat up your new rings. Carefully measure the the change piece and shift piece while you're in there, these can be a source of slop in the shifter and are ~$30 - $40 parts to replace. Make sure you clean out the insides of the main and countershafts while everything is apart. You may be surprised at what you find in there. Did the trans have any issues before you took it apart or are you just looking to upgrade? Enjoy the carbon synchros btw, they are really nice. I've got ~100k on mine and they were still in great shape when I pulled my trans apart at the beginning of this shutdown.

The lines the red arrows indicate are for identification, they're not from wear.
From what I can see in the pictures, you need a new countershaft 2nd gear, 3rd gear dog ring, mainshaft 5th gear, 1/2 and 3/4 selector sleeves. You'll need to tear ti down completely to inspect it.

Listen to him ^^^
common misconception that synchros "fix" transmissions. you need to look at the "teeth" on the hub and sliders. Take the slider off 2nd gear, you will see the damage for sure.

As for issues, I remember 3rd & 4th scratching going into gear at any RPM. Possibly 2nd as well. It has been awhile since I’ve driven with this transmission. I haven’t done much driving with this transmission either. (I got it from a craigslist deal several years ago). I remember axle seals were leaking. New axle seals would come in the kit, but now I’m wondering what I will need that isn’t in the kit. I will get a replacement change piece and shift piece.
I intend on disassembling the main and countershafts later today.

Yea, that’s what I figured. Synchros are a start, but I want to cover all my bases and replace anything that needs replacing.

I disassembled the main shaft and I can tell some of these synchros have some damage. Some more than others.
