How to identify a Honda transmission...
I am new to the game, I have a 97 d16y7 LX 4dr, I got a great deal on it because it had a bad input shaft bearing and rear main seal leak. I bought a transmission from a guy on craigslist for $50, yes $50... it shifts great, I was surprised given the fact it was a 50 dollar gamble, but the guy I bought it from says he was told it was out of a 93 lx, it was not in a car and the seller told him 93 lx so he had to believe him, he sold the car before he swapped it, so I got it cheap. I do not know where to find any codes on this transmission I usually deal with GM cars and I didn't think about checking which ratios I swapped to until I noticed that my speedometer was off by about 7mph at 75mph, verified by gps and my friends driving side by side with me. So now I am curious exactly what I got....
I guess that leads me to the question, where are the identification codes on these transmissions?? A picture or detailed description of where would be great, and how exactly do I decode the number found to know what car it is from??

It wasn't before, now it is, but the transmission had a broken speed sensor connector so I had to get a new one, maybe that has something to do with it...
Or the fact that the final drive ratio is different between 96-00 and 92-95 transmissions may cause an error?
Where exactly on the transmission is the casting codes??

the final drives have NO effect on the speedo reading. The VSS reads axle speed after all gear reduction has taken place.
The casting codes are near the fill plug.

P4A B000 can be 1996-2000 EX or HX tranny
Mattfree, the info you posted is wrong. I know, it is MY info that I posted incorrectly to know who was copying my info.
P20/A000 CX/VX and DX/LX have the same second gear ratio. The 1.762 vs. 1.761 really doesn't make any difference of the math. Good to know my mis info from almost 15 years ago is still taken as the word.
Also since 3.89 FD was not offered in 92-95 I'm betting you copied the info from Knology/Jedi link from years ago.
Oh yeah, .852 or .853 4th gear in the CX/VX tranny, which is it?
