Default gsr LSD transmission wtf

so I bought a supposedly early gsr transmission maybe from 96 or so with lsd the guy said it worked no problems and all original

took it apart and what I found looks like a poorly installed b16 lsd diff
and some chunks of metal that I cant find where they came from yet

heres the pictures if anyone can figure out what it is

the metal chunk is actually aluminum but I don't see where it came from

seems like its a viscous lsd and I shouldn't try to take apart that section lol

but how can I tell that it works and not locked up

is the gear inside the bell shaped part of lsd supposed to rotate freely or not rotate at all.
I only seen the newer type lsd from itr with gears in it


and can I use amsoil synchromesh with this type of LSD?

It's a 14 bolt JDM Viscous LSD. Some of the JDM GS-R transmissions had them. Usually what happens to them is they break the neck off the diff where the axle goes in on one side. Sometimes they'll lock up like a spool though, and sometimes they'll just function like an open diff. They're really not a great LSD, and to replace it you need to replace the ring gear and countershaft since nothing else is 14 bolt.

Those LSD are not very good like 94 mentioned. The helical type r diff is far better for function and durability.

How would i check if its still works properly and not locked up?
The neck is not broken as far as i can tell

so according to the internets helical lsd will brake if a wheel gets off the ground
I 3 wheel in and out of the shitty driveway every day in this car so I would assume the helical lsd is out of the question

You will not break a helical lsd in your driveway. On road race tracks sudden lifting and landing of an inside wheel under power can shock the diff and damage it in some cases.

oh this guy made it sound like it would brake at the first sight of air

but either way I already bought this one. ididnt know about viscous type lsd I thought they were all same in b series transmissions

gonna ride this one for now


anyone knows if the sealed part supposed to spin the axle gears or are they solid in it

Its easier to set up with the ball bearings. The tapered work fine, I usually only reuse them if they are in good shape and its being reassembled as is.

I recently rebuilt a tranny identical to this one. The ring gear and countershaft was stripped but the diff was still in good condition. It's super rare to find one of these and I may be able to get my hands on it to sell. If you end up buying a new lsd, then you'll have to buy a new ring gear and countershaft.

so theres absolutely no damage that I found inside or outside the case.

but I found more chunks of aluminum inside both shafts. how the hell?????

I've broken so many diffs :'(

It takes a long time to break them, though.

The reason they break like this is that a helical LSD is an open diff when one wheel loses enough traction to overwhelm the torque multiplication. So you lift a wheel...it starts spinning out...and then the car slams back down and you regain traction.

I guess I could just keep the wheels on the ground instead of shortcutting the curbing :/

But...no...you can't break it on a driveway

Yeah. It just may not have enough lock...depending on your tire grip.

The VLSD in my SR20DET 240 wasn't agressive enough to always lock.

If that diff didn't come out of the case it's going into then yes. It's really hard to setup tapered roller bearings without the proper honda tool. Enclosed ball bearings on the other hand are easy. If it's going in a case that had an open diff before you will need to shim it. I've seen them need two shims stacked together before

im hoping over 300.
its a 2 liter with itr cams and im thinking full boost as much as I can get out of that vortech if im lucky it will be close to the one on hondata page

looks like a similar setup but I donno what cams hes using.



also took apart the shafts to replace with carbon synchros and all the oil holes were stuffed with ****. thank god I didn't try to run this without checking first


my advice after 2 busted transmissions that were claimed to be good. DONT TRUST THE ****** SELLERS... pop the case and inspect it

Exactly... learning a few basic things inside a transmission can be very helpful when purchasing one. Anytime I sell a tranny, I always give the buyer an option to pop it open and inspect it for themselves.

Don't expect it to last. It may, I had a friend making more power and hers did, but I think it was the exception rather than the rule. I have one here with a broken collar that broke with only about 200whp. Driving style plays into it too.

Every time I take apart a supposedly perfect trans it isn't. I can't tell you how many times someone has bought me a trans they were told was perfect only to have it grind and think all they needed were new synchros only to have me quote them $800 in parts.

yea im 3 for 3 so far. all 3 trannys have problems

then I offer my transmission for 500 bucks and test drive it while it was in the car nobody calls. for about 7 months the ad was up

I pull it out and not even a week later the deuchebags be like. well can you prove that it doesn't grind ? and be like"i give you 300 cuz I can't see it run" wtf seriously?
