Default some little gremlins

hey folks, just a couple quick little issues that are pestering me and my project...

runnin a jdm d15b motor, had about 50,000km's on it when I snagged it, has roughly 100,000km's total on it now...just recently after the cold snap we had here the car has become quite problematic...

The first issue arose when I was coming down the highway one day at 130km/h or so and suddenly the car just started to cut...gave off a rather interesting smell, sputtered some and with each downshift I made just lost more and more power....got the car to a shop and went right for the ignition coil...replaced it and the car ran fine for a a few weeks...did it once again on me but this time maintained a speed of 100km/h for a minute or so in 3rd gear before just giving out on me...now the issue is...this time the car actually fired back to life, but not before spewing tons of whiteish/grey smoke out the exhaust (basically looked like I was doing a burnout on the side of the road there was so much pouring out)

Now the other issue that I and my girlfriend have both noticed is that when driving along the highway the air/fuel gauge gives some rather interesting readings...I was out cruising just a week or so ago after I thought I had all the problems worked out of the engine...got on the highway, WOT in 3rd gear, the gauge went from it's usual mid stoich/rich standard to a completely stoich measure and then suddenly dipped right into lean territory, there were a few knocks and it went back to stoich and evened out...now it has done this 4 times on me now since then (one time even when it literally hit full lean and knocked like madness). This ish is pissing me off royally as I've torn almost every aspect of the car apart in an attempt to track this down and all I am down to is the damn fuel pump...

If anyone has any ideas at all please post em up...i'm figuring that the d15b is givin up the ghost on me...

Sounds like fuel pump may be clogged or something. Could be condensation, bad gas, a number of things that are hindering your fuel flow, or even a plain bad pump. Have the pressure checked at the fuel rail, i think it should be just over 40 lb.
I did see a similar thing happen on my friends hatch, thing finally just died. We replaced the distributor and it went ran fine. he didnt have a a/f meter, so i have no idea what effects it would have there, i would think it would show rich if the spark wasnt hot enough.

Hey man,

I wondered about the bad gas, but I tend to keep the engine happy and above the 92 octane mark by fillin it with 94 octane daily...I tend to stay away from any cheap gas stations too (Sunoco is my mainstay).

Distributor went on the car about a year back...bought a brand new Honda OEM replacement so I knocked that off my list of things...the coild I had heard was a recall on most Hondas for the highway cut-off issue...as far as the spark plugs go they're a set of NGK Platinum plugs in there right now...the car in its haphazard state managed to roast my old NGK ZF plugs to a ridiculous point...

Guess tomorrow I will get up and check the fuel pressure at the rail and see what reading it'll give me...I'm hopin that it ends up being the fuel pump as the intake/fuel setup itself was just refurnished with a d16z6 intake manifold with injectors and all...cross my fingers...

anyways, thanks for the help total...I'll post back if I have any other issues

had a catalatic? converter stop up once and it caused the same bogging problems you are having.... just a thought ...... maybe too much back pressure and loading up on fuel..... causing the smoking??? just a thought...... good luck

you and me both thought of that as well...I had to have the car tested for emissions back in the spring last year so I had a brand new cat put on the car...a high-flow as well and fitted a new 2.5" pipe on the car to sort of ease up any excess backpressure....

ah well...time to figure some of this out...cheers guys for the help

A common thing with engines that sit for a period of time, especially on docks in Japan, is that the injectors go bad from condensation. So you can put on your old motor's injectors, or have a set shipped off for service. RC used to be great but due to recent changes at that company I suggest you try someplace else.

Hmmm....never actually thought of that...

I picked the z6 manifold up off a local japanese engine depot here in Toronto...by the looks of it the thing had been sitting there for some time so I polished it up and used some injector cleaner...hmmm...

well, I shall check that as well...managed to get the pump out...gonna inspect that in a bit and then take a trip down to pick-up a new walbro..

thanks for the tip on the injectors shaun, if I find anything wrong with those I do have a set of DSM 450's in the garage somewhere that maybe I'll try to work in and see.

thanks again guys!
