ok so i've had this problem for the past few months and never really did anything about it until i got pulled over recently.

when i turn on my headlight/multi-function switch all my lights work EXCEPT my tail lights, yet when i apply the brakes they come on. i have replaced the multi-function switch and checked all fuses and bulbs but everything is fine, im thinking maybe brake switch? but im not sure.

can anyone shed any light on this for me? thanks much

Find the wiring diagram for your car and post it.. what year car. Your obviously getting voltage to your brake lights threw your brake circuit. So you would have to check the voltage going from your light switch to your brake lights. See what is causing the c ircuit not to close or find the open in the circuit.

Need clarification, you said yoy have no tail lights, "yet when i apply the brakes they come on", by "they" do you mean the tail or brake lights?

Do the signal lights work in the rear?
Do the reverse lights work?
Do the signal lights work, in the rear?
Have you checked the bulbs?

And last but not least, what is the MM&Y of your car? 94

alright its a 94 honda prelude

and the tail lights/parking lights do not turn on when i turn on the lights with the multi-function switch, but when i apply the brakes the brake lights come on (they use the same bulb)

the bulbs were not bad so i didnt replace them.

check with a 12v tester to see if you have power anywhere in the rear light assembly. you might have the wrong bulbs

Check for voltagr before the light switch and after. But you cant do this without knowung wich wire goes where. Check all your fuses. Check all your connections again

same bulbs the car came with when i bought it and they worked fine up until about 3 mos. ago. checked everything, everything is fine.

i get your problem your rear running lights dont work. have you checked your fuses? and its not your brake light switch or the multi function. please double check your bulbs they should be two wires inside the bulb. this is a very weird issue tho. let me know if you find power to the rear where the light bulb for your running lights. maby ground? the blub should have two little metal dots on the bottom.

@ hondawhiz, yeah i checked all fuses, im going to check my bulbs in the moring cause its a little late right now and ill post what i find in the morning... everything worked fine till about 3 months ago...

but i have a voltmeter and when it first started happening i checked it and everything worked fine up to the brake switch. and i just kind of put it off till now to get the switch, but now i changed the switch and the problem is still there. i guess ill just check again tomorrow.

and turbohatch i would have in the first place if i could find one, thats part of the reason i asked for help, you have google don't you?

Lol yes I do have google as do you.. if you traced voltage back to your brake switch and knew what you were looking for you wouldn't have changed the switch.. don't expect people. To go out of there way to fix your problem. Get a schematic for your brake lights and post em. You have 3 wires to that bulb one a ground the other 2 positive. Check with your volt meter for voltage with your light switch on if it doesn't have voltage trace back from there. Didn't I already say this??

I checked myh helms and for your brake pedal lights you have 15 amp fuse in the under hood fuse box. Then voltage travels from the fuse threw your brake switch threw a connector then to your brake lights check voltage at the fuse and brake switch and report back with voltage readings

The bulbs may be the same but it is a diff. fillament/circuit.

If no park lights work, [front, rear, side markers] either the fuse is blown, [do not just eyeball the fuse, test it or repace it with a new or known working fuse] the Combination Light Switch is bad or there is a wiring problem, test for power on both fuse "test tips" when switch is on.

If no power, test for power on the park light output lead of the CLS, probably a red/green. 94

Okay I checked the wrong circuit. If your running lights in the front of your car are working and not your rear you have a,blown fuse under the dash. Or your anti theft system is the problem. Or you have a broken wire. Or wrong bulbs

does the helms say what the name of the fuse is? there are like 8 15A fuses and only 3 are for lights, one is interior, then L+R headlights. but all the fuses are fine tested all of them with ohmmeter and all were perfect.

I dont have tge locations.tell me if your front running lights work. If they work u have wiring issues or bulb

The brake switch does not controll the parking lamps and its working if you are depressing the brake pedal and the brake lights are coming on. Make it easy on your self and go right to the socket and see exactly what you are missing, power or ground. Also how did u check the bulbs? They are a double filament and sometimes you can get confused just by looking at them? Its not a very complex circuit and you have already replaced the swich and said you checked all of the fuses, so there's not much left. If you need a diagram i can log on to my Alldata when i get to the shop on Monday and see if i can post it on here for you.

Do not use a multimeter, [ohm meter] to test fuses, it has no load, use a 12V test light, [not the LED type] and touch probe to both test tips on the fuse while it is still plugged in.

Tail lights and rear side markers, [rear park lights] are all grounded at G551, middle of trunk under rear trim, have you checked the grounds?

Have you checked to see if there is power on the red/black leads at the tail lights when park/head lights are on?

Do backup lights work?
Do licence plate lights work? 94

OK so I'm having the same issue except my license plate lights dont work either

sounds like a relay..i had this problem before but it was a fuse..are your dash light still lighting up?
