Default Honda Engine F22 in a Corvair

Hey... Needing some expertise on installing F22xx engine into a Chevy Corvair. the F22xx engine was chosen because of the reverse rotation, similiar HP, Torque and weight. I know that might be a better motor, but Im looking for inexpensive and dependable engine for the aging corvair... plus I think it will be just plain cool.

I'm going to adapt to a Corvair Powertrain and so the transmission PCM/ECM stuff will not be needed, only the engine. I was going to buy a car with all the stuff in it so I will have everything. Which Accord would be best?, Do I need a manual Trans so I will get a ECM without the trans stuff. Does it needed to be ODB1 or 2. Im not looking for a fire breathing dragon, just a nice powered, running car right now.... all that later.

I alredy have the moch-up Corvair I bought last week. I found a 92 Accord Manual Trans w/F22A4 Car on CL that had been wrecked, but I want to make sure that I know what I need before I go spending wildly and waste money.

When I fuel injected/DIS the Corvair, (www.corvairnut.com) the guys were a little funny about that, after this I will be banned from the Corvair world.... this might be my new home.

Thanks for any help

Sounds like a cool project!
The 90-93 F22a1/4/6 are the engines you want. F22a6 from the accord ex being the highest output. I believe the accords of this year have a separate computer for the trans but I'm not positive. I would search in the accord forums here for more info on that.

Good luck

Well you could take an F22B2 engine which is obd2 due to its 1 piece wire harness and run it on an obd1 ecu minus all the obd2 emissions stuff.

Or if you feel like getting really indepth just make a obd1 "one piece" wire harness for your engine and make it all custom like "you still will need an ecu" I'm not sure if you want a programmable ecu or a plug and play one.

Obd2 engines went to a wire harness that's a 1 piece one all the way to the ecu un broken and just have wires that come off it for, things like , tach, oil pressure, battery light from alternator, speed, 12v... and other items.. However you will be required to run all the emissions stuff or the ecu will throw a CEL which is why obd1 you can eliminate virtually every emissions component and stuff have a working engine that doesn't throw cel's.

I got the Corvair/Honda Donor car today. Its a Rust Bucket 68 Corvair 500, but now I'm getting a little excited about this project.

Now to which car as a Honda Engine Donor. I've got a line on a good running wrecked 96 Accord F22b2. This car has obd2, and I think is an automatic. I'm using the Corvair Auto trans and will not need the shifting stuff.

My questions are:

Will I be ok with the OBD2 as long as I connect all the emissions stuff back up when I move the ECU to the Corvair?

Do I need to do anything to the ECU for an Automatic? (Does the 96 use a TCU and not part of the ECU)

If I convert to ODB1 with a convert cable, other than chipping what would be the Advantages/Disadvantages. Do I need to purchase anything other than the cable?

Can I use the 96 Distributor or do I have to change it?

Thanks in advance... I'm not a Honda guy (Y'all might make me one), but I am committed to making this thing work.... (against the advice of the Corvair community). Yes... that is a hovercraft in the background.

OBD1 ecus don't "look" for many of the emission related components found on an obd2 vehicle.

going to OBD1 is going to make this WAY easier in the long run. Especially if you want to run the corvair transmission. Not sure if that would even be possible with OBD2 i think the ecu would be too unhappy to ever work right.

I would look into something like a h22 from a prelude personally it would be more fun to drive, a b20 from a crv wouldn't be bad either, and if you would like to experience something else do a b20/vtec setup more pricey, but more fun, but then again you said reliable, and straight stock motor is the most reliable.

The reason I selected the F22XXX was the torque. The stock corvair motor has 150 ft lbs of torque @ 2800 RPMs. It also has 110 HP at 4400 RPMs, but this was measured in the "old days" at the Flywheel.

I'm a little concerned about the low torque of the Honda motor at low RPMs, but again willing to try. I'm not wanting to "blow" or modify the engine too much at first.

Ive got the choice of a 92 F22A6 or a 96 F22B? for the same cost and the 96 has less miles, but if it cost me a lot in extra sensors, new ECM, Harness converter, Distributor, etc.... then I might be better to use the 92 with OBD1.

If the 96 has a Manual Trans, would this make this conversion work and just connect all the sensors?

Thanks
