Icon2 Enthusiasts hobby shop / DIY place to work on car?

Hello, just want to let everyone know that this is my first time posting on this message board, so be nice ;-) As for the post, my clutch is beginning to slip in my car, which is probably about the average life expectancy for an OEM clutch because I have ~ 95K miles on my 2005 Civic Si. So, I am trying to find a place in the local area where I could do the work to replace my clutch. I haven't called the dealership yet to get a quote on parts and labor, but I am going to ballpark the whole clutch replacement operation at around $1000 USD, which is a little more than I want to spend. :-/ So, if anyone knows of a place i.e. a garage where I can do the work to replace my clutch in the greater Dallas area that would be awesome.

Also, being prior service I thought I would have access to the "Auto Hobby" shop @ NAS JRB in the Ft Worth area, but apparently you have to be active duty to access the shop or have a DOD job that operates on that base. :-/

*UPDATE*

I just called my local dealership, Frank Kent, and got a quote for parts and labor.

The parts were priced at $448 (including tax) which includes the clutch, pressure plate, and release bearing.

The labor cost was quoted between ~ 8 - 10 hours to complete at $100 an hour.

That being said, this makes the total repair cost of the clutch at ~ $1448.00 :-o

Rather expensive hourly rate. I'm sure you can find an independent shop that will have a lower hourly rate.

That said, good luck finding a garage or other place that will allow you to do work on a car. I would assume that the insurance to cover such a place would price it right out of reasonable for most people.

dude, hit up pepboys. i trust pepboys beyond all else for anything i cant do myself. theyre fast, getting almost any job you throw at them done in just hours and they do it well, and theyre typically really cool friendly people. tho that might just be where i live. im sure its possible to find cheaper but when i got my clutch done it was around 600 and they had to spend a **** ton of extra time on it cause i literally melted the clutch (dont ask, it was epic but also sucked ***, also dont judge me too hard cause the clutch had 163,000 miles on it so it was time anyways)

You just have to find a friend or relative if you want to use a garage. Been there, done that. Friends with air tools even better. You could change the clutch in a parking lot if you're daring. When I did mine I did it with minimal tools/jacks, so it can be done if its not going to rain. Biggest problem of using the parking lot is if you fubar something like a balljoint and have to leave it overnight.

And for gods sakes dont take your car to pepboys unless they've proven to do the small jobs right first. Too many pepboys shops are shady and incompetent. They'll do more damage than anything if you're not careful.
