I'm kind of a noob when it comes to Knowledge on gas my Honda manual says I should use 87 octane but I had a problem with my car the other day and my mechanic says its the fuel not reaching the engine that's why it wouldn't start so I added some octane booster to my tank and know it runs fine and all but he said I should be using 89 octane, I know its ok to use but how about longevity would it limit my cars max mileage or life span due to the fact that Higher octane means that the Gas is harder to burn of or I should stick with 87.

A couple of comments:

• As a general rule, ignore all "experts" regarding fuel grade and follow the manufacturer's recommendation.
• Higher octane fuel is NOT harder to burn; that said, you should still be using what Honda says to use.

also if you are having fueling problems, check your fuel filter and your injectors etc, maybe clogged with contaminants, also maybe try a fuel system cleaner

Did he say why fuel was not getting to the motor? That has nothing to do with octane levels. That is something else completely.

run the 87 octane. That's what the motor was designed to run.

Cars that are spec'd to run higher octane levels will knock and ping a little if they are run on a lower octane fuel. In short they don't run worth a darn.

I've heard many people say there regular fuel cars run so much better and get better fuel economy when they use a higher octane fuel. This has definitely not been my experience. I've tried it on a few of my cars simply for curiosity sake (2001 civic, 93 previa, 2002 rio). I also have a 2007 accord and have real time fuel consumption/mileage on my navigation screen. After running a tank of higher octane fuel (tank was almost empty so it was a full tank) there was no noticeable difference in mileage or fuel consumption. The car runs well as it is so I didn't notice if it ran smoother? The tank of higher octane fuel did cost me a few dollars more... That I noticed!!!

Ummm, no. Higher octane fuel does NOT burn hotter and there is no way it can help keep "carbon and things like that from building up."

And if your engine is set up to use lower octane fuel, it is almost sure, you wont benefit from higher octane fuel :S or just very little

Thanks for the Heads up guys lol is their a DIY of some sort to check Fuel Filter and injectors etc because I have no knowledge of fuel based issues if you guys would post a link it would be helpful

first off, what kind of car is it?

fuel filter? have you been putting mud in the fuel filler? if not, it's not a fuel filter. same part they used 20 years ago is a lifetime filter in the tank of a new car.

so what kind of symptoms does it show? what's the problem?

another thing, octane boosters don't boost octane. ask a chemist.. it's just not possible. so that was placebo or you have some sort of intermittent/one-time problem.

you haven't really told us anything but there is a 99% chance that "the engine not getting fuel" is not the problem. these aren't 50's cars running carburetors with cork gaskets and low pressure mechanical pumps.

As has been mentioned, more then once, use recommended octane fuel, you gain nothing by upping the octane, regardless what your mechanic says.

On that point, find another mechanic, the one you have does not know what he is talking about.

There are a number of reasons fuel would not "reach the engine", fuel octane level is not one of them, one of the more common problems is the PGM-FI Main Relay, or related to it... http://techauto.tripod.com/mainrelay.htm.

When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? 94
