noob to suspension set ups
Okay, as I said, I'm a noob to suspension set ups and stuff, so my flame suit is ready. But anyways, I need some real help on this. I see everyone talking about coil overs/shocks/springs/camber kits. I know what all of these are, but if I buy springs/shocks, is that in turn, replacing coil overs? and vice versa. I know I am a noob, and I need help, but I can't seem to find this out, what can I say, . Well, thanks in advance.

Re: noob to suspension set ups (knockout)
unless you plan on making this a track car, just stick with a good spring/shock combo. Eiback/Ground Control springs and KYB AGX shocks would be a good cheap set up thats perfect for daily driving.

First off, you have to understand that people use the term "coil-overs" to describe a couple different things. Perhaps you are familiar with Ground Control Coil-Over Springs. While these do offer ride height adjustablility, they are not true coil-over shocks. A coil-over shock is a shock with a threaded body for ride height adjustment, that usually includes springs, and upper mounts. A coil over spirng kit is (like ground control) is just a sleeve that sits on regular shocks where your stock springs would have gone.
The fact of the matter is: while true "coil-over shocks combo are usually more expensive than an upgraded OEM style shock w/ separate coil-over springs, it doesn't mean they are better. In fact, really good shocks (like Koni sports) combined with really good coil-over spring kits (like Ground Control) can actually cost more than some coil-over shock kits (like Omni Power).
Some coil-over shocks, and upgraded regular shocks, offer adjustable damping rates. The adjustability can be used to control how the car behaves when turning/braking/accelerating. This is a great tool for a sports car enthusiast that is looking for a specific handling quality. Also, adjustable damping offers the ability for you to match the action of any aftermarket springs you may be using (aftermarket springs are stiffer than OEM, and require stiffer damping rates as well).
While full coil-over shocks advertise "matched" spring rates & damping rates, it isn't quite that simple. How much damping you actually need is more of a personal preference than an mathematical equation...
Well I've probably confused you enough for now. If you have any more questions, let us know...
