Default Brakes Hard in the Cold Morning

I have a Honda Accord Coupe 2002- It has been an awesome car to me except just now. In the cold temps of Michigan winter mornings, my brake pedal gets hard then losens up after few seconds of "tapping" on the brake. I have to do this every morning before I drive or the brakes will get hard and not work while I'm driving! It has happened to me couple times until I figured out that I have to tap on it until it hardens up then loosens up. Once thats done, I drive the car and the brakes work fine. However, recently I feel the suction take effect a little after I brake, causing my pedal to fall further down and increase the effect of the brake (hope that makes sense).

Something is not right. I got my brake fluids flushed and that didn't help. I'm hoping its not the booster or master cylinder. Ive showed it to multiple auto shops and they say my brakes are fine. Of course they are fine because its warmed up and loose when I take it there.

What do you guys think? Its frustrating and scary at the same time! I love this car but the brakes shouldn't be doing this.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Hey pvt83 - I am currently having the same problem! I live in Montreal, where the past couple of days have been -30C and I have had trouble braking yesterday and today. The exact same symptoms as you described - the first stop I make, the pedal is hard, and the car slows, but not much. It feels almost as if only the back brakes are working. Then, after I pump them a few times they seem to work normally, with full pressure, etc. I almost crashed my car this morning, as the first stop I make is to turn onto a major thoroughfare - I drove into a snowbank to avoid getting T-boned! I have a 1999 Accord DX sedan, and I take good care of it. I had the front rotors and pads replaced a month ago, and the back brakes adjusted. I too was thinking that it might be the fluid - ice build-up, or something? I'm hoping someone will respond soon with a solution, as there doesn't seem to be many people with the same problem!

When was the last time your brake fluid was changed? Sounds like you've both older fluid which has absorbed water and is now freezing in the lines.

I recently had my brake fluids changed thinking it would maybe fix the problem. It didnt fix anything. My brakes are still acting the same. I think I'm going to take it to Honda to see if they can figure it out. I'm sure they'll say everything is fine.
