Dumb Question.... But I Need some answering ASAP
I know absolutely nothing about mechanics. So my question is what is the purpose of your distributor? And what would happin in theory if the wrong distributor was on your car? Ive got some acceleration problems and i believe my distributor is the cause. I need to know what purpose it serves just for the learning process of it... also if n e 1 knows of n e good website that i can learn more about mechanics like the parts and whats their function with the car. thanks

Basically the distributer provides the spark which goes to your plugs. This, in turn, ignites the fuel mixture in the cylinder, causing the pistons to move.
It's a big cycle and the makes the whole engine run.
For a pretty good explanation, go to http://www.howstuffworks.com and check it out.
EDIT: If you want to try to take a look. Remove the cap of your distributor and have a look inside. There are 4 contact points inside. The rotor (which you didn't remove and is still attached to the main unit) spins and the spark moves to each contact point...hence each plug.
