96 accord dies while driving

96 accord dies while driving
I have a 96 accord with a 5 speed manual. Non vtec. 180,000 miles. When I'm driving about half the time my car will die. It always happens when I shift to neutral for a red light or a stop. I then loose power everything and my rpms go to nothing. If I hit the gas pedal it starts right back up and I get everything back. What do I need to fix this is pretty dangerous. Please help I need to get school.
On a side note when my car starts up it revs high then goes lower and repeats tell it gets warm. Then everyonce in a whole it will stall out in idle. I think the problem may be related.
Thanks so much. Please help this car has been a nightmare for the last 7 months and I can't think straight to fix any more.

A few basics to start with: test the alternator and battery, clean the iacv and fitv and continue diagnostics from there. It seems like an Iacv problem though

Re: 96 accord dies while driving
The fact that it's temp related and is resolved when throttle is applied reduces the chance of that being it. The idle would either be continuously high or surge but not intermittent, granted it can't hurt to check all hoses for vacuum leaks

As I said, check the fitv and get the alternator and battery tested. As mike recommended, checking for vacuum leaks is a good idea. I'm still leaning toward an iacv/fitv issue

Re: 96 accord dies while driving
Normally one of the last things I would suggest to test would be the throttle position sensor as they rarely go bad but it may be the cause of this one so I would suggest to test that first. In the faq's sticky at the top of this forum there are threads on how to test and calibrate a tps. I would suggest testing it. It could have a dark spot at the closed position.
Also, you should find a mechanic or someone with a obd2 scanner and scan your car for codes.

Do I have a fitv and I pulled the idle air control valve partially out and sprayed some Brake cleaner in it. Also I don't throw any codes.

I attempted to make the same point, the closest I've seen is idle hunting but that's far less common than just a high idle as a result

Re: 96 accord dies while driving
OP, checking for a leak wont cost anything but a few moments of your time..... while your at it check for loose or bad connection at the tps... nmely the pins in the pigtail.... very common. In my experience.

Re: 96 accord dies while driving
Not trying to argue.... but. The idle hunting issue is 9\10 of the time caused by bad iacv. Or bad connection/ wiring to the iacv...... the idle and dying out issue could b vacuume leak or bad tps/ bad connection on tps. The op's car is 18 years old. Any of the suggested causes is verrrry. Likely.

Re: 96 accord dies while driving
Thanks for the help. I couldn't find any vacum leaks but I was so frustrated I took the whole intake apart and cleaned it all with break cleaner and replaced all the hoses. (I have a bunch of extra just laying around) it took about an hour an half and it runs amazing now. To bad my ac clutch failed right after I got everything running. Sigh. You fix one thing and another thing pops up.

Re: 96 accord dies while driving
I had this problem before, no leaks no problem in the engine bay then this mechanic checked the ignition assembly then there it is the ignition assembly is the problem. I downloaded the video on how to replace ignition system from youtube under "bushougoma" channel. Problem solved, no more dying engine on stops, deceleration and acceleration. I just hope this is what your looking for.
