Icon2 LS Vtec not passing Washington State emmissions. Please Help!

I need held passing emissions on my OBD1 EG LS/Vtec here in Washington! So far I've gotten really close to passing, but my HC (PPM) is too high. Limit here in Washington is 400 and I failed with 442. My test results say Fail- Due to low idle readings not being within limits?

The LS/Vtec has a GSR head and a LS block that's stock internally only has headers, intake, and exhaust with a Catalytic converter.

I was using a PR4 virgin ECU for my emissions testing instead of my chipped p72 ECU. The idle started bouncing for a little from 800-900 rpms while idling with the stock PR4 ECU, it eventually stops for a little then comes back. I took my car for a nice 15-20min drive to get my catalytic converter hot. After about 10min of driving my check engine light turns, but turns off when I shut off my car at the emissions testing shop. Every thing passes except for the HC (PPM).

The idle bounces around with my chipped p72 ECU also on cold start from 1100-1800 rpms until it warms up then it stops. I'm thinking it might be my TPS sensor that's not allowing me to pass emissions due to the idle fluctuating while at idle and while I was revving to 2500rpms during the test?

I really need help passing emissions as this is my daily to get to school and back. Any helpful info would be much appreciated!

On my LS VTEC Type r head and cams I went with a chipped P28 from phearable and I started with great performance but a loping idle. I just turned my idle mixture adjusting screw one full turn counterclockwise and it smoothed out the idle and now the car is perfect. I don't have to pass emissions in Florida but you might try this. Good luck.

Post the sheet. What do you have your idle set to? When your ECU throws a CEL, there's generally a good reason for it - pull the CEL.

Idle is set at 800rpms with the p72 ecu. The p72 doesn't throw any check engine lights, only the pr4 does.

When was your last full ignition tune-up? Is your timing set correctly? Have you done a compression test? It doesn't matter if the P72 doesn't throw a CEL - you aren't using it for emissions. What CEL does the PR4 throw?

I just changed Spark plugs the day before Emissions, the rest I haven't changed for about 2 years. The timing is set correctly, I was thinking maybe retarding the timing a bit before doing emissions again? I haven't done a compression test for about a year, but I know the numbers are good. I haven't checked what code the pr4 throws due to not having a OBD1 reader. But the check engine light turns off when I turn off the car and turn it back on.

pull the dam code geez..... what are we doing here. this diagnosis should not go any further without that code regardless if the other ecu throws a code or not. different ecu's have different ignition timings make sure its on time with the ecu that throws the check engine light

You don't need a code reader to pull OBD1 codes. Read the FAQ's sticky. While you're doing that, do a compression test - low compression will throw your idle hc off.

Sorry for the late reply, but I just got the code pulled. It's code 12 EGR Lift Sensor. I also did a compression test and it's in the 180's on all cylinders.

Ok so I think I found out what the problem is, I'm using a pr4 ecu which is trying to detect a EGR Valve but my car doesn't have one. This would explain my idle fluctuating because no EGR is recognized. I'm going to buy a OBD1 p75 ecu and see if that will change my problem.

Yeah it turns out it was a auto pr4 ecu that I was using. Should be getting a p75 ecu here in a couple days.

You noobs need to be specific in your tech posts. How do you expect to get the correct help you need and a quicker response?

Only kind of relevant buy here in P.A. (in the county's that actually do emissions) they can fail you automatically simply for the air filter you have installed.

Update: Passed emissions! I put in a bottle of Guaranteed to Pass gas formula, put a p75 ecu in and drove for a good 45min on the freeway and straight to the Emissions station. Passed my test with flying colors! Thanks everyone that tried helping me, much appreciated.

That is crazy, i never would have guessed it would work that well. Definitely going to have to pass that one on.

Yeah me too. Just follow the directions on the back of the box. My HC (ppm) was at 442 when I didn't pass, then I put in formula and it went down to 364
