Re: The Official Formula 1 2014 Season Thread
Sure it is. Trying to get ppl hyped up over F-E.
They also mention that F1 has forgotten the fans, but have they? The FIA listened to the public survey they put out and have made attempts to give the fans what they asked for based on that. (sound wasn't mentioned at the time)
They mention empty seats at practice and qualy. Look at the stands at exhibition/pre-season football or baseball games and they too are not full at all.
They mention that F1 has focused too much on TV, but really - how many of us have actually been to a race? There are some, of course, but realistically, TV is where the overwhelming majority of ppl are going to be getting their F1.
Article is misleading.

(maybe if they're putting down F1?)
But as for the F1 fans... I think there's some truth in that... forget about the new sound I'm not even referring to that. But F1 sound has never been even remotely close to being accurately reproduced on TV. It wasn't until this new era that they decided to eq the TV broadcasts a little better.
You're also probably right that most have never been to a race live, but shouldn't that mean that they should broadcast better?
There's been talk on several F1 news sites about adding mics in key locations, and EQ'ing/mastering the audio better... there's some interns who I've trained who could probably do a better job with the audio mastering.
Let's not forget the tix prices... they've always been up there for grandstands... recently read an article about them dropping prices at some venue, and attendance shot up (even for practice & quali), so it seems there might be a correlation.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2014 Season Thread
What pisses me off about Formula E is that they switch cars during the 1 hour race instead of just switching out batteries. Sure I know that due to design and blah blah blah..
But daddy don't give a ****.
I want to see 15 second pit stops where they slide 4 rows of battery plates out and back in while changing tires. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit... It's not these damn things are designed by Apple! Even Tesla has quickly replaceable batteries.
I realize the irony in suggesting the potential "future of racing" needs to get with the times.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2014 Season Thread
It could all be done safely if they developed a proper procedure. We're going to get drivers complaining about the setup in car #2 vs car #1 or vise versa.
Might add some more fun to the mix but also might just look really really stupid.

Re: The Official Formula 1 2014 Season Thread
Sir Jack Brabham, the three-time Formula 1 world champion, has died at the age of 88.
A statement from the Brabham family said that the Australian passed away peacefully at his home on the Gold Coast on Monday morning.
Brabham was the first man to win an F1 title in a car of his own making, as he established the Brabham team in the early 1960s after winning his first two F1 titles with Cooper.
It was with Cooper that he had made his F1 debut in 1955, having begun his career in midget racing and hillclimbs in Australia at the start of the decade.
After initially focusing on the team's sportscar and Formula 2 efforts around sporadic grand prix outings, he became a full-time F1 driver in 1958.
His maiden victory came in Monaco at the start of the following season, and kicked off two ultra-successful years that brought him both the 1959 and '60 world championship titles.
He created the Brabham team for 1962, initially running a Lotus while the first of his design partner Ron Tauranac's creations was completed.
It would be his initial team-mate Dan Gurney who took the Brabham team's first wins, but in 1966 a run of four mid-season victories set Brabham up for his third and final F1 crown, this time in his own car - a so far unique achievement. The Brabham team also won constructors' titles in both 1966 and '67.
Brabham retired at the end of the 1970 season, which he had begun with a 14th and final GP win at Kyalami, selling the team at the same time.
While his eponymous squad went on to further title successes with Nelson Piquet under Bernie Ecclestone's ownership, Brabham was able to watch his three sons Geoff, Gary and David embark on highly successful motorsport careers in their own right.
Grandsons Matthew and Sam have also commenced single-seater racing careers in recent seasons.
"It's a very sad day for all of us," said David Brabham. "My father passed away peacefully at home at the age of 88 this morning.
"He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of and he will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind."

Brabham was a Royal Australian Air Force flight mechanic and ran a small engineering workshop before he started racing midget cars in 1948. His successes in midgets and Australian and New Zealand road racing events led to him going to the United Kingdom to further his racing career. There he became part of the Cooper Car Company's racing team, building as well as racing cars. He contributed to the design of the mid-engined cars that Cooper introduced to Formula One and the Indianapolis 500, and won the Formula One world championship in 1959 and 1960. In 1962 he established his own Brabham marque with fellow Australian Ron Tauranac, which became the largest manufacturer of customer racing cars in the world in the 1960s. In 1966 Brabham became the first – and still the only – man to win the Formula One world championship driving one of his own cars.
