Default Short Radius elbow for downpipe?

Have you guys ever used a short radius elbow (cast stainless) for the initial turn off the turbine housing?

http://www.mcmaster.com/#45735k132/=oaxihf

I have an EK, full-race prostreet manifold, and need to make a downpipe that will allow for Koyo Radiator and T1 fan shroud setup. The current setup has a 2.5" vband connection and tapers to 3" at oil pan. It uses a long radius which hits right into the radiator/fan setup

Will the short radius hurt the flow any as compared to a long radius bend?

Thanks!

Here is a picture of the current setup, the new koyo/T1 setup requires even more clearance

You could certainly cheat that cut and turn it more to work. Also, look into stainless donuts, they are true tubular pieces with tight radius.

The donuts are pretty expensive, I think you can definitely get that bend you have to fit now with some modifying.

stainless donuts or i believe atp has some tight radius elbows....whatever you do please do not join the "pie cut" club.

What's wrong with pie cuts? I'm seriously asking a question, not trying to start an argument.

It seems the pie cuts are the best in terms of overall space needed. Notice that the 2.5" short radius bend only takes up 3.25".

The same 2.5" schedule 10, 90 degree pipe from Mcmaster would be around 3.75 if I'm measuring correctly.

i can understand pie cuts when necessary, but i dont see why some people prefer to use them.. maybe cuz their cheap and dont want to buy a lot of bends?

pie cutting is less than ideal from a structural and flow standpoint.

i have used 2.5" schedule 10 tight radius 90's in the past for such an instance as this. you can transition it to a straight leg of a 3"x16g 90. what are you planning to do with the wastegate? running a tight rad bend will also aid in creating space for a nice dump.

I use/stock 1D tight radius mandrel bends with legs up to 3.00". Thats all I use, pie cuttings does 2 things:

1)takes way too damn long to cut, prep, and weld.
2)your just giving yourself more chances for weld failure.

Thanks for the info guys. The point I keep coming back to, is that even the "tight" radius bends still require a certain amount of space to make the turn.

The schedule 10, 90degree stuff looks nice but requires nearly an additional .5" to complete the same bend that could be had with a pie cut setup (above).

Even with the 1D pipe , any idea the total space needed to make that bend? I have a feeling that its larger than the 3.25" you can get with the pie cut.

My personal preference would to not use a pie cut, but I may have to... still a bit more measuring to do, and I have to pull out my Core Support some (realized it was pushed up and in which isnt helping my available space).

a 1D 3" mandrel bend would need 4.5" of clearance if cut on their tangent lines. cheat it a little and you can get pretty much the same clearance as the 3" pie cut you have pictured.

what antilag said is exactly correct. they take forever to prep and weld and it is just asking for a failure point.

Check out verocious motorsports, they have some very tight radius mandrel bends available. Their prices are pretty reasonable as well on their bends (they also have Vibrant bends but they are much more costly and on a larger radius).

Just bought a 3.5" 304 ss 180 bend on 4.5" radius from them for example (among other things)... was spot on, nice consistent tight radius bend.

just went out to Verocious website, I see the 2.5" 90, on 2.5 " radius. There is also a 2.5" 90 on 3.75 radius.

I'll try the 2.5" on 2.5" radius, sounds like what you guys have suggested
