Default MPG with Cold Air Intake

How does a cold air intake affect mpg if at all?

You might improve 1/2 MPG if you stay out of the throttle. The best thing I have noticed from aftermarket intakes are a improved throttle response.

Thanks. I'm still debating SRI and CAI for this wonderful New England weather.

SRI if your in a rainy place and its your DD. If you go with a CAI get a bypass to prevent hydrolock in case you ever soak the filter. I have ran my CAI without the bypass but my hatch is not a DD and saw very little rain. I removed the CAI to help get rid of the rasp it was causing in my exhaust.

This is rarely the case, with the D17's. You're looking at merely a placebo effect and slightly louder engine noises, when it comes to aftermarket intake options on the D17. Some models have even been known to reduce performance slightly.

just get a short ram intake if you really wanna go that route and make it sound like theres something in there. haha. with the cold air intake, you're just gonna suck up water on a rainy day. then it'll just end up ruining your day. and your car.

None of their numbers seem to correlate with real world results, though.

You will mainly gain noise, and whatever little toqrque you have to begin with will move the rev range. The transmission was down shifting more often than with OEM air box.

i think the only real upside of an after market intake is the lifetime filter.

I only ask because I've heard if installed correctly, you can gain some mpg. While my car is a slug and probably always will be, I am not too interested in power. MPG, Stopping, Music, Turning and Appearance (slightly) is all I really care about.

Unless you're doing it for the looks and the noise it makes, or if you plan on adding more to your engine (like a cam and full exhaust) later on, then there really is no reason to get one.

Based on your input, I'd say "Skip it."

if you're looking to gain MPG's, look more to lightening your car... i think you might also look at what kind of tires you have, as well and how much air pressure you have in them.. i believe there are quite a few threads that discuss MPG gain.

please explain more on how the "sound" of the cold air intake is somehow going to make it through the intake, throttle body, into the engine, through the intake valves, through the power stroke, and back out the exhaust valve? it's AIR, it doesn't retain a certain sound, the inside of the engine doesn't care what kind of intake it is, it's going to pull the same amount of air into the cylinder, it's going to compress it the same, and it's going to go out the same, the only reason for a CAI is the cold air is a little more dense, so more air going to be able to be in the same given amount of space, it's like the difference between the air density on a hot day,and a cold day. what cracks me up, is a lot of the CAI intakes I see are made out of aluminum, lol, it conducts heat very well, making most of the intakes useless, a true CAI would need to be made out of something thats slow to conduct heat, like plastic or composite

In order to really get the full benefit of a cai u need to upgrade the ecu that way it adjust the air fuel ratio properly. Otherwise all your gonna do is gain maybe 1 or 2 hp
