Cheap simple turbo build *quick help*
First off I purchased a slightly used kit for a price I couldnt pass up there is no real shaft play just a hair.
My question is 1. is this normal for this turbo to be so black like that?
2. will the intercooler piping work the way the turbo sits? its facing forward and not down like I normally see. It seems like im missing a pipe there are only two L pipes for this side and one L coupler.
:: everything is going on an EG hatchback, parts I have so far:
-turbokit built manifold 3" down pipe ebay wastegate (needs new spring)all pipes and cooler, blow off valve already welded on and still ok. (going to upgrade)
-tapped oil pan with drain line
-oil sandwich with line for turbo (oil restrictor can be put on this?)
-Precision 680cc x's 4
-chipped P28
-wideband
I'm hoping to not have too much trouble getting this mounted and spooling on my engine (B16A)
thanks everyone, I felt I needed my own thread since it will be on going, Im new to turbos will need some help with where certain lines go and any tricks

You have to clock the turbo. There should be bolts on the intake side, loosen all of them and rotate the turbo until that charge pipe is facing down. Cant see from picture but does that dumptube have a flexpipe? If not it will eventually crack with it positioned like that.

I will get real pictures, its a 3" downpipe, the dump wont crack its welded to the dp nicely.
I am debating on putting a flex at the 3" opening to my 2.5" exhaust, OR cut the dp and put one in the middle. or both.

They can face however they want, you need to clock it and adjust the piping from there. Not a big deal.

To clock the turbo, take off the bolts holding on the compressor housing (shiny side) and then it will spin relative to the rest of the turbo.

Re: Cheap simple turbo build *quick help*
^ Don't need to take them all the way off, just loosen, but what he said. You may need to tap it with a hammer at first to get it to spin. The exhaust housing will do the same thing. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that the oil CHRA is as vertical as possible, other than that both housings can face however the way relative to each other, just needs to work.
Walbro is a yes. You will need a clutch also.

my only issue is how to rig this up, if it faced down id have the pipe sent here and bolt it all on but the way the turbo faces its going to need custom bent pipes and couplers which for some reason arent here? the guy took literally everything off his car and gave it to me

I clocked the turbo very happy how everything sits oil line straight up oil drian straight down turbo inlet pointing down like it should.
I need one pipe, fuel pump, map sensor, and injector Orings. finally a dyno tune.
anything else tweaks I should ad? what psi spring I should put in the waste gate?
will I really need a map sensor if I run 6-9psi

Whatever happened to good cheap builds that just used non ebay parts? Like a T3 off thunderbird, good cast manifold, home made charge pipes, DSM bovs, dsm injectors, all reliable cheap parts

Re: Cheap simple turbo build *quick help*
I know people running these parts they arent all bad (the turbos are hit or miss). ill tinker with the origial waste gate a little bit but will upgrade that, and the blow off valve. but will use the original **** for atleast a test run or two.
so im thinking the flex, im going to cut the dp and put one and then bolt it to the exhaust system.
I found a really awesome link, basically same kit it looks like. the motor love FI cannot wait to bolt up

Re: Cheap simple turbo build *quick help*
Cheap,Simple and Turbo are three words that should never be in the same sentence. Usually cheaping out and youre running into more problems later, which in turns ends up costing the same.
Also define chipped P28 youre using some sort of management right Chrome neptune ectune ect.
Cheap and simple can quickly turn to expensive and complicated

if it turns into disasterous im going to sell everything and profit off the parts.
im eye balling a tial waste gate, its new, and could be real. im trying to get it for 180$ opinions?
forgot to mention cars tuned on chrome, probably dial in a basemap street tune checking plugs and wideband readings...then bigger block cams IM TB and dyno tune

Re: Cheap simple turbo build *quick help*
just get an ebay waste gate to go with your ebay kit. they're about $40.
not as impressive as shiney ebay parts.

I have the complete manifold it has the shitty wastegate on it but atleast it is new. im looking at another tial right now.
so. the vac lines that come off. the lower one goes to the turbo outlet to know how much psi its making? and the top one goes to a vac line or from what I seen people dont even use the top one.....hmmm
people arent very happy with my cheap ebay parts should I just stay NA then? lol

Re: Cheap simple turbo build *quick help*
k, well once the turbo goes out then whats the issue? I want 300hp max, I dont need a fancy intercooler or turbo to produce that atm. I do want the wastegate and bov to start though. then once its dialed in we'll talk about 4-500hp parts after I put use to the lower hp set up for a while.
boost for under 1500$

The only things you can really get away with on ebay kits is the intercooler, piping and the manifold if it fits. Anything with a moving part is questionable
