2006 Honda Odyssey Engine Whine
Recently started hearing a 'whine' coming from the engine compartment. Don't think it is PS since we had the pump & fluid replaced last year as part of the recall. The whine seems to be loudest at low speeds as we begin accelerating.
This summer we had 100k mile service done at local Honda dealer during which the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and spark plugs were all replaced. Seemed to run fine all summer, but started to whine with the onset of winter. Just doesn't sound right. Any thoughts?

either you got something rubbing by your belts
or PS,
check if you got enough fluid in there
its possible they didnt do the bleed process or ran the pump dry, ive seen some shitty techs but to bleed, just start the van, turn the wheel back and forth couple times, then turn the wheel all the way one way like all the way and hold it for 20 seconds, it might screem at you but its ok, then do it the other way, if that doesnt help they didnt something wrong

Check to see if the power steering resivior is wet. Also check for bubbles inside of it with the car running. May need a suction Oring if so

Thanks, I'll try the power steering bleed. The resevior is full - assume that's what you mean by 'wet'. It was loosing fluid constantly two years ago before we had the PS pump replaced under recall.

Not to try to change the focus here, but I've been putting up with a similar whining noise on acceleration and I had attributed it to the PS pump - had it replaced - no fix! Tested out the other moveable parts on the front of the engine - no noise! A mechanic tells me now that the noise might be coming from the transmission. I have no problems with the transmission though. Any other diagnoses??

Re: 2006 Honda Odyssey Engine Whine
These year odyssey were notorious for that PS whine. it turned out it was not the pumps... Change the PS High pressure hose O ring and also change the PS reservoir while you are at it. The Oring allows air into the system.. so even if you have a new pump same issue will come back.. I changed my oring and the reservoir and noise is GONE! the Reservoir is supposed to have a filter which goes bad as well. They were also recalled..

Are you sure that it is coming from the engine or could it be front wheel bearing noise? To check, see if the noise happens when the car is parked and you rev the engine in neutral.

Good suggestions all - thank you! Reving the engine when parked or in neutral changed the pitch of the whine. We had the timing belt replaced last summer as part of 100k mile service, and the PS pump the year before that (under the recall).
Bleeding the PS pump seemed to take care of the whine, but I don't know for how long. I haven't driven the van recently - it is my wife's car and she's very possesive of it! I'll check it tonight and let you all know the latest.
Not sure about the O-ring and the resevior. If they weren't replaced under the recall it seems like air would continue to enter the power steering system and cause the whine to recur. I'll dig out the repair report and see what it says was done.
