Default 316 L stainless steel for an exhaust manifold!

Hi guys / ladies.

I was wondering if I can use 316 stainless steel pipe/bends for making my exhaust manifold?

Any ideas?

If your building a 304l manifold sure you can, I'd only use it for your stainless to stainless. Then 309l for you stainless to mild.
Hope this helps

Without getting crazy technical, it will be fine. It's more prone to detrimental metallurgy issues at high heat, but does have better corrosion resistance. 304L is actually a better choice for the heat of a manifold, with 321 of course being much better yet.

yes I think there has been discussions on here about 304 v 316. I personally think 304 is more than capable so use that most of the time.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Yes I was talking about the base material.

It's also true that 304 stainless it's much more heat resistant that the 316

304 stainless resists at 1100 C deg continous heat where the 316 resista at only 900 C deg.

The fact that I want to use 316 stainless is because this is what I have in stock now .

Anyway thanks for the input guys, I was only trying to find out if anybody used 316 for a manifold.

I experimented with and used some 316H schedule 40 pipe on a turbo manifold years ago and it worked just fine. I eventually switched back to 304L sched 40 pipe since it's cheaper.
