So my 99 Prelude Type SH is apparently running too rich. I have black spots all over my rear bumper. What are the steps to fixing this problem? Or what usually causes this problem? I'm also getting fairly poor gas millage. The check engine light is on and when I coded it, it was the cat coverter so probably the sensor?

Oh. I also have a cold air intake that the previous owner put in. I'm not sure what brand it is.

Is it like burnt oil?
Does your car burn oil? My prelude burns oil and I have the same thing. Valve seals.

I'm sure my car burns oil but it shouldn't go all over my rear bumper and make my exhaust look completely black. O2 sensor would fix it?

It's an H22A, oil's the most likely candidate.

So your saying it's because my car burns oil that it goes all over my rear? There's no fix? Literally, after 3 days my rear bumper and trunk is fully covered in black spots.

If you own a factory-tuned Prelude, you're running rich.
Get it re-tuned.

well i have a 99 integra gsr and i have that exact same problem. when i floor my car, a big cloud of black smoke comes out. i was told it is either piston rings or valve stem seals. get it fixed asap because over time those black spots will stick onto your paint and it will become rough to the touch.

I've googled and asked many people. Each person gives me different answers. They tell me to add something to my oil, or change the cat, or change the o2 sensor. Maybe it's just me, but I don't exactly want to drop down $500 for the o2 sensors and another $400 for the cat and then finally having to tune my engine which, from what I have heard, costs about $100 an hour.

$500 for O2 sensors? $400 for a cat? Now I know you're lying about searching.
O2 sensors = $55 each. new cat = ~$75 (Magnaflow on ebay)

I wish I were... Check this then. And these are discounted prices in the states. I'm from Canada so I'll be most likely paying more:
18160-P5M-A00 | CONVERTER (GHE975) | $457.86 36531-P5P-014 | SENSOR, OXYGEN | $232.77 36532-P5M-A02 | SENSOR, RR. OXYGEN | $193.97

The Magnaflow cat is $719.64... but that's on their website. Seems like people have been able to grab them for only like $100 bucks:S

Andrew, I think the problem is that you're retarded. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
![]() Universal cat = weld it in for 40-100$ depending on the shop, quit bitching. If the O2 sensor needs to be spliced in, spend the 10 minutes to learn how to solder or get someone to solder it in. (or alternatively run clips). Get some new spark plugs while you're at it too just to make sure. to answer your question, it could be a number of different things, and the fixes range in cost vastly depending on what is needed and how mechanically inclined you are. The internet is there for you specifically and your problem specifically has over 10 years of archived information for you to figure out what's the best fit for your problem. We even have people here spoonfeeding you the answer and you're too dense to use that information but instead you want to cling onto nothing. Keep it up and you'll be shitting money like diarrhea. You're expecting too much from people who you're not paying. |

lmao Andrew just take it to the dealer and have them fix it, you seem bent on spending way too much money.
Universal or direct fit means it'll fit your car bro

i had this problem for awhile actually. my before o2 sensor was bad and i replaced that but still i had black spots on my rear bumper. i got mines for like $20. since that didn't fix the problem i went and got me a cat converter magnaflow from autozone for $160. i was in the process of replacing it but i broke a bolt connecting my cat converter to my catback pipe and said forget it, so i returned the cat converter....i figured i'll just go ahead and replace my valve stem seals and piston rings first because that is where the smoke is coming from. then, i'll go ahead and replace the cat converter.
