DIY: EP3 component speaker install w/ pics
since theres not enought love for the ep3's here i decided to make a diy
ok i got these speakers for fairly cheap,so i decided to install them.
these are lightning audio speakers that were made by rockford fosgate, and retailed for about 500 buck a while ago.
i need to get some pics of the tweeters i did those about a week ago, i just cut the hole untill they fit and then put alot of hot glue around the back to hold them in place, but ill post some pics later
door pannel( sorry for the blurryness)
pry there to pop that piece off
take out the 6 screws(4 small, 2 big)
remove the harness from the window switch
pry the silver piece out w/ screwdriver and remove the 2 screws
heres what it looks like with everything removed
pry the blue piece off of the door latch thingy, be careful not to break it. and remove the cable
door pannel removed
push down on the clip and then lift up. or you can do what i did and just pry it out with a screwdriver and break it cause i didnt know how to do it haha
heres my speaker baffle, wouldnt recomend mounting speaker directly to the metal. it also doubles as a spacer
mock up on the speaker. easyiest way to mount:drill hole thru wood and metal ,about 3, then install screws countersink them a little bit so they dont stick out, then put your speaker in and screw it down
stock wires crimped with longer wire to go to the crossover(didnt relize at the time but you not going to need the green wires because those go to the tweeter and the tweeter will have a new wire to it
wires ran and speaker mocked up
door pannel on and crossover installed, need to change the wires up a little bit
everything else installed
dont forget the foam pieces like i did

looks good! the only thing id suggest is to mount the x-over somewhere else. any time you open the door when its raining, the xover and wires going to it are going to get wet. Its also exposed to bumping stuff and whatnot. if theres room inside the pocket at the bottom of the door or behind that it might be a safer alternative.

there wasnt anywhere else that was flat enough. inside the pocket put it at a weird angle and i didnt like the look of it much, and on the backside of where it is now it would have been hard to mount it.
plus i kinda like how it looks right there

What about on the inside of the door, like in the 4th pic from the bottom? you could mount it to inside of the inner door skin sheet metal.
As long are youre careful about opening the doors when its raining hard, youll be fine. I do like the look though. also, if you move it at this point, youre gonna have mounting holes in the door card, so you might as well just leave it alone

well i thought about mounting them inside the door skins but then it would be really hard to get to, and mount.
yah and the holes are already there so whats the point.

hmmmmmmm maybe you can get creative with fiber glass and mold a "cover" over the cross over so only the front of it is showing... that'd look cool imo. good write up though!
