Default 2001 honda accord with tranmission issue

Hi There:

When I start car, give gas, it does not pick up speed smoothly and gives one or two jerk. However once it reach spead 30 or higher, then no issue. After driving 10/15 miles, if turn off engine, start driving again, it does not give any problem. So I took car to repair shop, as per them transmission is wearing out. He showed me transmission oil which was black. Car has 90k miles on it. I did 60k services, check engine ligh is off. As per repair shop, 90K service could be performed becuase of suspected transmission issue. As per him, transmission oil could not change as well, changing transmission old will cause more problem. He gave big quote around $4000 to replace transmission.

I am just wondering why 90k service could be performed.
Is it worthwhile to spend $4000 for transmission replacement. Is it quote itself too high?

Thanks for your response in advance.

""Despite the Accord's reputation for reliability, the V6 models were plagued by transmission failures and were even included in class action law suits against the company (4 cylinder models were also affected, but not to the same extent). This caused the Honda Corporation to extend the warranties for the 1998 through 2002 models to seven years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km). Yet no formal recall occurred. In Canada, recall letters were sent out to owners who fell within a certain VIN range, this warranty was later re-extended for some owners to 7 years 11 months in length.""

Check with the dealership NOW; I had had mine replaced, you might get lucky. The trick is to get the dealership the car was originally sold to; call honda. If it's an 01 and the dealership bought it december 01, the warranty will be good until like august 09.

The mechanic is yanking your chain; lots of mechanics are hurting right now and when they hurt, they rape. $4000 for ANY transmission job is WAY TO MUCH! The highest it should go, unless you're talking an uber-expensive or uber-old car is $2500. A remanufactured trans with all new components save for the housing from honda sets the dealership back $1300; the newer trans doesn't blow out as easily and carries a 3 year warranty. The fluid when burnt is generally dark, dark red. If it's brown in any way, you have a radiator fluid leak into the trans and the radiator and trans need replacing (I've had this happen).

Labor on a replacement should be MABYE 600-700; call the dealership and get book time. They have to pull the engine and trans, pull the trans off of the engine, reinstall the trans, put the works back in the car and they're done. What you do is since the engine is out of the car, get them to do a water pump and timing belt job and clean out the EGR passageways at half cost of labor; even if it's warranty work they'll do it that way but get it in writing and ask for the old parts. Since the engine is out of the car this is a super-easy task and at 90k it's time.

Thanks bobinator5000 for your response.

I am taking this car to same repair shop since last 4 years, I was thinking they will consider loyalty and give correct quote.

I already talked to Honda Customer Services, they told me that tranmission is out of warranty (91 month or 107K). As it was purchase in Feb 2001. I am out of luck over there. However I heard about GoodWill Repair, I will try that.

If Car gives jerk in this manner, is this guarantee to be transmission issue? or something else which could be repair with very less money.

I just wondering it is worthwhile to spend so much money on Honda 2001 cars whose KBB value is around $5000. As you mentioned that when transmission being replaced, try to replace timing belt and water pump, clean out EGR passageways (I do not know what is this), together all this item would cost around (best guess $4000 = $2500 (Transmission) + $1500 (others)). Would it make more sence to get rid of this car and buy another 4/5 years old car?

I will try to get quote from dealer as well. Again thanks for your response.

Actually further researching price for honda 2001 transmission housing is less than $900 including tax on honda website. Is it all? or there is more need to replaced?

This is a four cylinder, right?

You can always do an auto to manual swap, the cost for having a mechanic do it appears to be around $1,500 (from what I've read, I've not done this - mine is already a manual).

This is 4 cylinder. Thanks!

my car is out of tranmission extension warranty it is more than 8 year old, although mileage is less than 100000, however you know what earlier is applicable. Bad luck there.

Here is quote from dealer:

Transmission Part Cost: 2087
Labor: 1113
Total: 3400 for tranmission on 8 years old. Does it make sense?

One more thing they ask me to repair immediately because engine oil is leaking into transmission...so i need to replace Rear Main Seal (labor: 105.27 + Part: 27.42 = $134.95)

After further asking for Goodwill Repair, dealer is ready to replace transmission for $2000 with part and labor. However dealer is not ready to disclose any detail of labor and part for $2000, basically they do not want to disclose how much Honda is taking care of this. Let me know if there is any way to find that out. I do not think I could get better deal than this.

Thanks for your response.

Whenever mechanics lower their price like that they were ganking your chain to begin with. How do you take $1,500 off of a quote for "good will" and keep in business?

Grab a phone directory; call 3-4 honda dealerships. Ask them.

"What is book time on a transmission replacement?"
"How much for a factory remanned? What is the warranty on it?"

Call Honda and ask the same. This is how you catch a dealership screwing you.

$2,000 is fair IF the trans comes with a 3 year warranty. If they're going to swap in a used trans it isn't worth your time. But beware, if you don't trust this shop be careful; sometimes they break things or say "weeell, this needs fixing too".

they are not taking anything off of the price Honda of america is picking up the remainder of the tab, in this case $1,500

I am having somewhat of a similar problem and a transmission shop told me it would run about 1500 to rebuild.
