Default 04 Pilot P0730 Trouble Code

04 Pilot EX 33000 miles. It is out of factory warranty. The engine light came on today. I checked the trouble code at Checkers and it said P0730 "Irregular gear ratio". The guy at Checker asked if I had different size tires on than stock as that was what he thought it would be. When we bought the car 3 weeks ago we made the guy put on new tires and he ended up putting on P225/75 R16 Goodyear Wrangler ST tires. My understanding is that stock are P225/75 R16. When I looked up some codes online at the Honda Pilot forum I saw that the code could be transmission solenoids and other transmission issues so I am concerned just to let it go as it was the tires. Any thoughts? The car seems to be running fine, no gas mileage issues, no hesitation, no anything. Thanks

That's the first sign of a transmission failure

Sweet. I was kinda hoping it was the tires.

Anyone have any experience dealing with Honda on these types of deals. I know my car is out of warranty but damn, 33k miles and I assume I am looking at a $3k repair. I just bought the car 3 weeks ago and paid to have a dealership do a full certification inspection on it before I bought it.

Thanks for the heads up on the code.

I went into the dealer yesterday and yep, they say that I need a new transmission. Granted that he admitted that the diagnosis was strictly based on the trouble code and nothing else as the car runs fine. I am going to talk to the service manager on Monday, but for now what bothers me is that the engine light is gone. I know they told me that they reset the system, but if a problem exists, wouldn't it continually show an engine light? I guess what I am getting at is that is it possible to just reset the system after you see a code come in, sell the car to some sap like me and then a couple of weeks later the code comes back on? Doesn't seem to make sense. The tech also told me that the system doesn't hold memory, as in if someone checked the computer now, there wouldn't be any record of a trouble code ever being present. Is that right?

Thanks

Dale

if it was cleared then all recorded data is gone, the code and freeze frame data. there is also the possibility that the fault is intermittent and the tcm may only see it every great once in a while, the light could come back tomorrow or in 6 months. how many miles have you put on it since it was cleared?

I have only put about 60 miles on it since the code was cleared. It is a shame they don't have a memory chip to store all codes. That would be a useful tool when buying a used car. I guess there are always ways of bypassing a memory chip if you want too bad enough, but it would be useful most of the time. I will see what the dealer says tomorrow. If I am paying out of pocket for a new tranny, I guess I will drive it until I actually see a problem with the transmission.

Thanks

dale, the "light" will come back on its only a matter of time.

talk to the service manager and the honda rep for which ever dealership your going to and ask if honda will help you pay for some of the repair i've seen 50,75 even 100 percent get paid before. its not going to hurt to ask.

and it sucks that some shady person probably sold the car knowing what was wrong with it from the get go.
