Auto to manual swap - ECU question. 98 Accord (6th gen)
I'm doing an automatic to manual conversion on my 98 Accord (6th gen) and was wondering a few things.
One being the ECU....which manual ECU do I need (obd1, obd2)? I have an F23 motor. 2.3L VTEC....
Also, is there any need to reprogram the keys when the ECU is changed like that?

you need an OBD2 manual ECU, and yes you will have to have the keys reprogrammed to match the ECU.

Make sure you get the VIN number off the car the 5-speed ecu came from. It'll make the immobilizer reprogramming much easier.

Re: (stinker504)
So once I do the swap, do I have to get my car towed over to Honda and get the keys reprogrammed so I can start the car? Also, any ideas on how much the programming will cost?
**Are all the ECU's from stock manuals the OBD2?**

No, you can drive the car with the auto ecu in. The car will just be in limp mode. I paid $100 to have the immobilizer reprogrammed.

You can still do the auto to manual swap with the V6. The parts you need are the same except you need the ones from the V6 model.

The wiring is a bit more involving though.

How'd the car run like that?
The only that keeps me from jumping on doing this is the wiring, I haven't seen anyone do a decent/complete write up.

Re: (stinker504)
I got the manual ECU anyways. I have to get it reprogrammed...no idea how I'm going to get it programmed then get it back to the shop. Or maybe the shop will take it to get it programmed.

You sure just leaving the D plug out will work to run the manual tranny? If so, I will do it...it'll save me from getting the keys reprogrammed.
**Also, where is the D plug??

Any car 95 or 96 and newer is OBD2 no matter auto or manual. Has to do with the computer being different and the plug to access the computer.
In my state most OBD2 cars that go for emission just get plugged in and checked to see if the car has any emissions components not operating properly. OBD1 still needs to get on the rollers and sniff tested.
