Default FAQ: Retaining Power Steering in EK with B series Swap

Lately, there has been a lot of threads, asking "How do I keep P/S in my ek with a B series?"

People are having trouble, because of false information about the pumps...
Not all B series pumps are the same! Not all B series lines are the same!

Here are 2 pictures for reference:
Name: PSPumpD-B3.jpg
Views: 19195
Size: 47.5 KB
As you can see, the high pressure in line on the pumps varies, from OBD1 and OBD2 pumps, as well as between EM1 and DC pumps (This goes for LS, GSR, and ITR pumps, as well as B16A SIRII and B16A3 pumps.)

Consequently, hoses are different as well:
With matching fittings...

Size: 29.4 KB

Also, the hoses themselves, are different (fittings aside)
EK lines are short... The hard line has 1 bend in it, from the rack's opening, in the right/rear.
EG/DC lines are significantly longer... The hard line has several bends in it, routing from the left/rear of the rack and zig-zagging a bit around the chassis.
-->You MAY be able to rebend a EG/DC hard line....but probably not. I have rebent quite a few lines, all without kinking them...but failed miserably with rebending an 01 ITR line... Besides, even if you are able to rebend it (180* in the opposite direction AT the flare fitting) you end up with a hose that's really too long (whether you care about that or not...is up to you)

So...for simplicity's sake:
You need a power steering pump from a 99-00 Civic Si (EM1) and your stock obd2 (EK) power steering lines.
However, you are more than welcome to fab up your own custom lines using whatever pump you want, with matching line/fittings...good luck

Now, as far as brackets go...
Most B series lower brackets are the same. Just snag one off any DC Integra, Del Sol vtec, or Civic EM1.
Upper brackets, however, are specific to the head that you're using:
--B16 = P30 (I assume ITR is the same...but don't quote me)
--GSR = P72
--LS = PR4 or P75 (these 2 brackets ARE different)
You cannot use any of your D series brackets...sorry, TS. I have read about a few people that tried, and if they did fit, it resulted in chewed up belts...fast...

******************************* *********NEW************************************** **

Running a P75 Head?? You can use your D series pump IF you use the CRV P3F ps bracket.
It is a complete upper and lower bracket (head->block).
Seen here, number 6

Part number: 56997-P3F-000 ($55 new)
This makes sense, seeing how the crv is just a giant ek

If Ive forgotten anything, or screwed up...let me know or correct me

Nice thread, i ended up making a bracket for my friend with an ITR and kept his stock PS pump. Its easier then hunting down pumps and brackets. But good thread none the less

okay, so i have a 97 civic EX with a 94 del sol VTEC b16a3 engine. i took power steering off when i had the d16, but i kept all of the lines, pump, resevoir and all. so you're saying the only things i will be able to reuse is the lines and resevoir? i knew the bracket would be different, but why the pump?

because the fittings on the pump are different
see pictures
Also, the D pump doesnt fit B blocks/heads

Youre keeping the lines, reservoir, and rack - you really get to keep a lot

I can't remember what combination I used but it worked and I didn't have to buy any extra parts.. I swapped a 98 gsr into a 98 dx hatch.. It was some combination of one ps pump and hose with the others bracket.. I almost want to say it was my d series ps pump and hose with the b series bracket.. Someone here gave me the info so I tried it and it worked perfectly... I'll try and take some pics...

That em1 upper bracket will not fit the LS head...a or b
The em1 high pressure line is the same as all 96-00 D series Civic lines already... Telling them to buy an em1 line is telling them to buy parts they do not need

Okay guys, a pic wont work well but i promise this isnt too hard.
heres my windows paint example and my explaination.
Use the upper B series Bracket and nut and bolt your D power steering pump to the upper mount removing your lower mount from motor.
Slide the PS pump up and down to determine the proper slide/oval hole for the lower bracket.
Now just trace it to some cardbroard and using a drill some angle iron vise grips, bend your own. I got weak and had to use my welder. took about an hour but it was worth it. Now put your pump as low as it will go and run some string around the 2 pullys. buy a belt that size. Good Luck.

How long have you been running this? Any noise at any rpm? Have you inspected it for wear?
I suspect youre only relying on the oem upper bracket to align the pump properly?

ive been running it for about 15000kms or so
no wear at all, never and noise. Its a home made bracket not a home made connecting rod.
its fine

I would just be conserned that it wouldnt be aligned properly and you're wearing out the bearings prematurely

Nice DIY.

However...I too would be concerned with premature wear-tear if it doesn't get aligned properly.

So has it been confirmed whether or not the ITR power steering pump/brackets are the same as the B16 ones? I'm putting an ITR motor in my 97 EX coupe soon (hardline is still installed and sitting there), and I'm getting the ITR power steering pump and brackets with it.

EDIT: Nevermind, reading evades me. I'm going to pick up a B16 power steering pump, and sell my ITR power steering pump.

Glad you noticed!
The whole reason I wrote this was all my trouble with an ITR pump!

So for an LS, B20 motor, you'd need both LS upper lower brackets and a Civic SI PS pump?
