96 accord fifth gear grinding

96 accord fifth gear grinding
whats up folks?
I have a 96 accord LX, it's ULEV 5 speed 2.2
problem i'm having is that i cannot put it into fifth gear without grinding it.. this does not affect any other gear, only fifth, it happesn at ANY speed, even if i hold in the clutch for a few seconds before shifting.
i am planning on trying replacing the clutch (but i only have 118,000 on the car...)
any thoughts?
also, i am thinking about installing a light weight flywheel when i do the clutch. I had one in an old toyota of mine and it really made the thing snappy. i rarely have much weight in the car and wonder if this would help improve fuel economy or performance enough to justify the $200-$300 expense

Re: 96 accord fifth gear grinding (tankcntdrv55)
If it only does it in fifth (5th) it will not be the clutch. There are possibly two conditions at work here.
1) Worn / Damaged syncro rings, gear and shift fork
2) 5th gear damage from insufficient lubrication.
Both will require dis-assembly of the transmission

As with any clutch complaint, I (along with just about everyone else in here) will suggest checking out the clutch control system first. Check that the clutch fluid reservoir is full, and the system is free of air. (you may have to bleed it)
Once you've established that it's working full range, we can continue this conversation.

Why not just fix a problem instead of ignoring it so it can get worse?
Have you changed your transmission oil? Hope to God you put the right oil back into it.

While you're taking care of the Transmission issue, now would be a good time to (at least) inspect the clutch while the trans is out.
At 118k, I'd replace it; just because I wouldn't want to have to re-visit this any time soon.
A lightweight flywheel is a worthwhile investment if you like a rougher idle and stalling at launch (if you're not prepared). You will have improved compression braking, and it will rev up quicker in neutral, but they don't contribute to going faster....
