may sound noobish but do you feel any more vibration with the balance shaft off?

This is definetly something I will do after I tear down my car. It's been a while after the robbery and I think this is a good way start. Thanks for posting this. For some reason I'm really looking forward to doing this more that all the other things I've read in the DIY threads.

Maybe you made it look easy... I guess I'll find out.

If your running aftermarket mounts, or inserts to stiffen the mounts, you will definatelly feel more vibration. It isn't really all that bad though. I didn't mind it, but I am also running DIY inserts in my mounts, no PS, no cruise, no AC, and no cat.

So by the time you get used to all that the little vibration you feel is really nothing. And anyway if your doing this to your engine it is for performance. I certainly don't mind giving up a little comfort for a few ponies. If you do then I wouldn't recomend it.

I did the DIY polyfill mounts, and the balance belt removal at the same time so I increased the vibration, and decreased my mounts ability to dampen it at the same time.

is it required to remove the crank?

seems like i could remove just one of those main caps to tap the thread in the block and be careful to where the shavings land.

I'm too lazy to pull the motor out just to remove the shafts, so I did the ghetto method to stop the shafts from rotating... I cut the belt.

if or when I need a motor rebuild I plan to remove the shafts and use this kit.

do the shafts have their own individual belts, do they share the same belt, or do they share a belt with anythin else that would require a smaller replacement belt(kinda like having to get a smaller belt if u take off the ac or ps)?

the balancer shafts (2 in total) are on a single belt that drives them both. This belt drives nothing else on the car.

its the rear middle hole, the only one that a drill bit that size will fit..IIRC. Plugging the dowels in the girdle is pluggin specific oil passages that lead to the BS areas.

Lastly we need to block an oil passage in the block that runs to one of the shafts??

just wondering if someone could tell what the reason blocking off this oil passage is for??

can you leave and not have any problems??

my understanding is that you would have low oil pressure if you don't plug the passageways.

think of it like having your thumb over the end of a garden hose, you've got higher pressure in the hose and coming from the hose past the small opening created by your thumb. then when you move your thumb out of the way the pressure in the hose drops.

it's the same in your engine. pull the shaft journal out of the way of the bearing and oil passageway, and you loose pressure.

on another note- FYI if you will... shafts, pulleys, rear gear housing, everything removed only weighed 9lbs all together (came out of and F23A1). i've seen ten, which i believe, but i've also seen 15, and 22 (somewhere in this thread). enjoy.

Do you have to pull the motor out to remove the balance shafts?

Yes, or cut holes in the uni-body to slide them out the side. Could drop the engine down enough to do it without technically removing it. I guess you could also slide the shafts out as far as possible, cut of the ends, slide them out a bit more, cut them off, etc.

If you take the main bearing caps off there won't be much holding it in...
