Advice/Help Needed P28 on non vtec Engine
I searched and found entirely too much contradictory information on the subject. Bought a 93 Del Sol Si without knowing the engine had been swapped. Car has a D16Y7 running on a P28. I'm of course getting vtec codes. What I'm wondering is exactly how detrimental to the engine will it be to continue running this setup? What should I be on the lookout for? Am I risking washing down the cylinders because of overfueling? What can I do other than replacing/chipping the ECU? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

What are you afraid of ? You likely got a really good deal on this car since it had issues (you knew this because the CEL was ON), so spending another $50-125 for a P06 ECU shouldn't be a problem. It will plug right in... easy peasy !!!

... and this solution will be WAY cheaper than buying a D16Z6 as TomCat39 suggested, although it won't be nearly as powerful. It's your call OP.

Granted, I didn't associate the costs for any of it and swapping the ECU to the P06 is by far the cheapest.

To be fair, I did also include the swap the ecu as well as chipping/tuning the ecu with quoting him and bolding the options. I wanted to highlight all options available.

No worries, wasn't taking it as argumentative. Wasn't sure if you noticed or not so was just pointing out in the case you missed it. And your addition of cost is a great addition to boot!

Yeah, I think the low cam of the Z6 is pretty close to the B7 cam so it runs relatively the same on a B7 block. The IM is slightly different, smaller plenum so the resonance is a touch different but it's not something you'd like notice with a butt dyno, only a real dyno would show the subtle differences.

Afraid I was going to be spending more money on it I definitely overpaid on the car a bit. If it wasn't a Del Sol I wouldn't have paid what I did for it. My quick deductions in my head didn't take into account everything I've sunk into the car so far. I'll still be below what a "nice" one usually goes for though so I did ok I guess. BTW what part of Bama are you in?

The scene has changed over the years... but some of us are still dedicated and committed to the Honda/Acura scene no matter what.

Wouldn't the D16Y7 and D16Z6 have about the same fuel maps and timing(except for when VTEC engages) since they're both 1.6 litres? I'd think the stroke would be the major difference, prior to VTEC, and not the head. I've been running my JDM D15B on a P28 and I believe it has the same head code as the Z6(P08) but the stroke is what concerns me. The timing belt is even shorter on my D15B(103t and 104t on Z6).

Car is acting funny around the Vtec engagement point. I believe it's over fueling. When we changed the oil we had a STRONG smell of gas. I also HATE CELs

Decided not to go with that company they require you to send in the core to activate the warranty AND they will charge you another $100 if you don't return the core. I won't be trading a P28 for a P06.
