What to do if I want to add GPS to my car?

What to do if I want to add GPS to my car?
Just curious if anyone who knows GPS can tell me what to buy? And should I make the GPS system USB-compatible so it hooks into a laptop?
I guess I need an antenna, and I need to not cut the wires? And some sort of GPS thingie with an LCD screen?
Antenna - how much?
GPS system w screen - how much?
And how much is the monthly contract?
Does this make enough sense or am I missing something?
My car does NOT have any GPS currently.
PS
I will install it all myself.

Thanks.
I guess I could just buy a simple android phone for like 65.00 and get a 15.00/month data plan, and as long as I can browse the Internet which the androids can, I would have GPS once I get the phone mount. So I just need to shop for a phone mount. The android's not a high-end phone, but it's still a "smart" phone, just not as smart as an IPhone which costs a lot of money. Or do I need the "smart" phone for the GPS? I guess the phone must have a sensor for latitude and longitude. So a cheap 65.00 phone wouldn't have that? Or would the phone antenna be able to upload and download coordinates to an app running on the Internet or on the phone?

the phone w/ a mount is the cheapest option.
next option would be getting a garmin or a tomtom

most expensive option is double din in dash navigation. this is the one i had. you have to also buy the antenna and mount it inside your dashboard or in your headliner (recommended)

androids are just as "smart" as iphones. Lower end models will just have a slower cpu etc
and yes it needs to have a internet connection for gps to work properly

My favorite app turned out to be HereDrive+ - it has audio directions so no need to touch the phone. It really worked out well.
