I have mine configured for MTB and during the winter Snowboarding. This is just my opinion, but why don't we all drive VW's it's the norm in that crowd.
I love the idea of it when it's being used, but if you browse the group threads most of them aren't being used and are there for looks!

i thikn youre making a blanket personal attack on anyone with a roof rack that doesnt show a pic of them using it.
maybe some ppl DO just put every type of JDM or USDM accessory on their car for mad tyte points. but you made a lame blanket statement about some kind of fad.
so ill say it again, youre just seeing what you want to see.

Picked this one up used from a buddy. I take this car snowboarding when the roads are clear, but have put chains on it a few times.

Like I said "this is just my opinion".
I could put mine back on and go show it off, but why? I love my rack and it has served me well over the years.
We could go back and forth over this till we're blue in the face, but it's undeniable that some are using them for show and there are people who use them like you and me. The blanket "fad" is for the people who do just that; use them for show.

btw, you think the fairings help? i didnt find THAT much windnoise nor increase in MPG without one. i track every gas fill on a spread sheet.
i have a feeling they just increase turbulence since theres nothing behind it. its just a moving plate (air dam), rather than two skinny bars.

The way I have mine setup it roughly follows the windshields angle and does help direct air over the rack. When you open the moon roof you can feel deal air behind it. Think about the deflector for your sunroof and my moon roof. Very similar idea.

Re: roof racks??? for a ef???
yes, and the plastic accessory deflector for my moonroof created extra turbulence when the roof was closed. causing noticeably more wind noise. it only benefited when the roof was slightly open or in the cracked position to reduce noise. (yes, im an accessory *****, actually only when its useful, it was a mazda6 deflector that fit so i rocked it until i cracked it.)
dead air right behind the fairing means a larger wake of turbulence behind it. so that only helps confirm youre better off without it.

I found no other benefit than a fun place to put stickers. And Tyson...I thought you might notice the wheels in the pic I posted...
