Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
hey I got 2 questions regauarding a maaco paint job...
I went there and told them I wanted to do my own prep- and they said that the car wouldnt be covered under their warranty? is that the same for others who did their own prep?
and they said that if the paint bubbles and stuff it isnt their fault...which I guess makes sense.
I was gonig to use epoxy primer over all the dented areas that I fix and wetsand the car's original paint down with 220 and then 400-
should I still then let them prep it with primer sealer or no?
also-
can you ask them about which painter is going to paint the car and what experience they have?
for instance, lol... can I ask them to have a painter paint the car who knows how to adjust the gun properly so that there will be minimal orange peel?

I would really highly suggestion you prep it yourself. There seal job is okay, if it was possible even do your own masking job. I was an former employee @ maaco. Most of the paint techs are hired off the street. They have no interest in the car's finish and no interest in cars period. Aslong as they get a check to smoke up thats all that matter. This is there typical value prep de-wax spray, d-a the **** of your car (320 grid) Tack paper and blow dust off your vehicles. Then mask and off you go. The typical customers car would be done within three hrs...seriously sand/mask/paint and bake lol. The painter at our Maaco wasn't even certified. He lied on his resume, thats why I painted my own car. I know everything sound nuts, but all Maaco locations aren't the same good luck!!

one thing i've noticed in here is people knocking orange peel. keep in mind, many cars have orange peel from the factory.
my '08 mazdaspeed3, and every one like it, has peel. in fact, i had to have some custom work done with a rolled lips, etc, and they (not maaco, my preferred private shop) had to refrain from color sanding too much to match the OE peel.
just sayin'

one other question:
about their one stage paint job:
can it be color sanded and buffed to reduce the orange peel? or is it you get what you get?
does polisihng and waxing help preserve the maaco paint, or does it usually get shitty over time even with up keep?

they will use paint chips- cards painted to represent the color...to compare and contrast against your existing paint until they get the right color.

traditionally, single stage can be sanded, that is actually, afaik, where the term 'color sanding' originated from.
now, how much are they applying etc is the question, so you might have to be careful, but, traditionally, to get rid of peel with any paint system you would wet sand and buff.

My homies' GSR before and after. They did an awesome job I think. Very, very minimal orange peel if any....
Not bad for $500.04 and they fixed a large creased dent in the driver quater panel. Didn't do every little ding but most of them. Just got the paint job for a quick sale...

Re: ____OFFICIAL MAACO paint job thread_____
I think I'll give maaco a chance. For one my car is not a show car and is my DD. If the paint only last a yr or two I think the price isn't bad. And if my car turns into a show car then I'll pay 5g for paint.
Can Maaco get the factory color paint to do a re-spray? Also would they charge less if you provide the paint??

lol @ people knocking maaco paint jobs. i understand if some people dont feel comfortable getting their cars painted there but I think for those of us who have had stuff painted there, let's keep the secrets to ourselves and save our money. I know I've had over 30 cars painted plus numerous lips, etc. and they turned out great. You just can't be a complete moron and understand that ITS ALL ABOUT PREP!
That's my **** before I even had a cut and buff, which in most maaco situations is a must.
